The U.S. government will now force agencies to increase reporting on AI usage as part of its extensive policy to curtail the risks introduced by technology.
Vice President Kamala Harris, in a press briefing from the White House on Thursday, March 28, reiterated the government’s commitment to responsible AI integration. She emphasized the societal responsibility that comes with AI adoption and the need to balance its benefits with mitigating risks for the public. As part of this, she announced that government agencies will now be held to specific standards when using AI solutions.
Under the new directives, government agencies using AI tools will be required to assess their impact on citizen rights and safety. Vice President Harris stressed the importance of transparency, stating that citizens have the right to know how the government is using AI and to ensure it is done ethically and responsibly. This move is expected to increase accountability among government leaders, as transparency often leads to accountability.
The V.P. also noted that the White House has ordered all federal agencies to assign a chief AI officer who is experienced and has adequate expertise and authority to govern all that regards the A.I. industry.
Notably, these measures align with the AI security standards established by President Joe Biden in October 2023, reflecting the administration’s commitment to safeguarding citizens from the potential risks associated with AI, including the deployment of “dangerous biological materials.”
The government’s proactive stance underscores President Biden’s broader efforts to address emerging challenges in AI governance and reinforces the administration’s commitment to promoting responsible AI deployment while protecting public safety and security.
