OpenAI is reportedly in talks to secure one of the largest artificial intelligence computing hubs ever planned, with a proposed b data centre campus in southern Ohio that could reshape the future of digital infrastructure.
The project, expected to be built on federal land at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, would be developed by SB Energy, a SoftBank subsidiary. Under the plan, OpenAI would lease the facility for 20 years and control the computing equipment once operations begin, with the first phase targeted for 2028.

If completed, the campus could cost more than $500 billion based on current estimates for chips, construction, labour, and power.
AI infrastructure push reaches unprecedented scale
The proposed Ohio site would stand out for its size alone. With planned capacity of 10 gigawatts, it would exceed the combined footprint of OpenAI’s existing Stargate network spread across several U.S. states.
The project also shows rising demand for computing power as AI companies compete to train larger models and process increasing workloads. Reports indicate the campus will be supported by extensive power generation, including more than 9 gigawatts from natural gas.
For the crypto industry, which has long relied on large-scale computing infrastructure for mining and blockchain services, the expansion underscores how AI is becoming a major competitor for energy resources and data center capacity.
Nvidia enters strategic partnership for the project
Nvidia is expected to play a larger role than simply supplying chips. Reports suggest the company may help back financing arrangements tied to the project while providing advanced AI hardware for the campus.
The companies had previously agreed on plans involving at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems, with early deployments expected to use the Vera Rubin platform.
OpenAI also plans to launch the OpenAI Deployment Company, a new company designed to help organizations build and deploy AI systems they can rely on every day across their most important work.
OpenAI expands as IPO plans advance
Alongside its infrastructure ambitions, OpenAI has confidentially filed paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a potential initial public offering. Anthropic announced its own IPO plans earlier this month, while SpaceX is set for an IPO on June 12.
Although the company has not committed to a listing timeline, the filing comes as investor interest in AI and digital asset firms remains strong. Recent public offerings from crypto-related companies have fueled optimism in capital markets, while major AI firms continue investing heavily in new infrastructure to support future growth.
Additionally, OpenAI introduced EVMbench in collaboration with Paradigm, a new benchmark that measures how well AI agents can detect, exploit, and patch high-severity smart contract vulnerabilities.
