A high-profile case involving a crypto fund manager has drawn international attention after authorities in Zanzibar began questioning him over the death of his fiancée during what was meant to be a celebratory trip.
Joe McCann, founder of a crypto-focused investment firm, is currently being held for questioning by Tanzanian authorities following the death of his partner, Ashly Robinson, a 31-year-old U.S-based influencer. The couple had travelled to Zanzibar in early April, where they had recently gotten engaged during a safari trip.
What began as a birthday and engagement celebration quickly turned tragic. According to police accounts and witness reports, the couple had been involved in repeated disputes during their stay at a luxury resort. On April 8, hotel staff reportedly separated them into different villas following an argument.
Hours later, Robinson was found unresponsive in her room and was rushed to a hospital, where she died the following day.
Investigation ongoing as questions remain
Zanzibar police have confirmed that McCann is being questioned as part of an ongoing investigation and that his passport has been withheld while inquiries continue. Authorities have not filed any charges against him and have described the current stage as fact-finding.
Initial reports from local authorities suggested the possibility of suicide following the dispute, but that conclusion has not been finalized. Officials are still awaiting full autopsy and forensic results to determine the exact cause of death.
The lack of clarity has only deepened concerns around the case. Robinson’s family has publicly challenged the early narrative, saying the circumstances do not align with her state of mind prior to the trip. They have also raised concerns about delayed communication, noting that they were informed of her death by hotel staff rather than directly by McCann.
As of now, investigators are continuing to interview witnesses, including hotel staff, while reviewing evidence from the resort. No official cause of death has been confirmed, and no suspect has been named.
A developing case with wider attention
While the investigation is primarily a criminal matter, it has drawn attention within the crypto industry due to McCann’s role as a fund manager and public figure in the space.
For now, the case remains unresolved. Authorities in Zanzibar have indicated that further updates will depend on the outcome of forensic examinations and ongoing interviews.
Until then, the situation remains a developing investigation, marked by unanswered questions, conflicting narratives, and growing calls for clarity from the victim’s family.
