Virtuals Protocol has pledged to reinstate its bug bounty program after addressing a critical vulnerability flagged by pseudonymous security researcher Jinu.
The flaw, discovered on December 3, 2024, could have disrupted the creation of AgentTokens, a core component of the Protocol’s ecosystem.
In an X post, Jinu noted the issue has severe consequences for the Protocol if exploited; this bug would have rendered the generation of AgentTokens impossible until the contract was patched. The researcher expressed concern about the Protocol’s commitment to security even though they fixed the issue as soon as it was pointed out. They claimed that Virtuals Protocol did not have an active bug bounty program at the time, leaving the researcher without a reward.
Also, a Discord group dedicated to vulnerability reporting had reportedly been shut down.
“I’m surprised that a project as big and hot as @virtuals_io doesn’t care about security,”
Jinu wrote in their X post.
In response, the Virtuals Protocol team confirmed that the issue had been resolved and thanked Jinu for bringing it to their attention. Addressing the absence of a bug bounty program, the team announced plans to relaunch the initiative soon. “Security is of the utmost importance to us – we’re working on a bug bounty program and will announce full details soon,” they stated in an X post.
The vulnerability, which stemmed from inadequate validation in AgentToken creation, was promptly patched by the Protocol’s development team after its disclosure. The quick response helped mitigate potential risks and reassured the community about the Protocol’s commitment to security.
Meanwhile, Virtuals Protocol has been the subject of public interest lately following the price growth of its native token, VIRTUAL, in the last few days. A whale investor reportedly turned a $10 million investment in VIRTUAL into an unrealized profit of $11.5 million in just 19 days. By January 2, 2025, VIRTUAL reached an all-time high of $5.07 after a rally that began in mid-November 2024. The token’s value rose sharply, with a 44% surge in a single day. According to data from CoinMarketCap, VIRTUAL is currently trading at $4.22, an 8.65% decrease in the last 24 hours.
