The Ontario government has obtained a court order from the Superior Court of Justice to freeze the donations made on the GiveSendGo platform, as a ploy to stop the millions of dollars from getting into the hands of Freedom Convoy protesters.
This comes after Gofundme, a popular crowdfunding platform, froze the millions of dollars raised by the protesting group and refunded the money to the donors after intense political pressure. Government officials have been trying to defund the Freedom Convoy and their protest activities targeted pressurizing the authorities to rescind their COVID-19 guidelines for truckers.
Protesters are using the GiveSendGo crowdfunding platform to raise funds to sponsor their activities. The protests are being done via the “Freedom Convoy 2022” and “Adopt-a-Trucker” pages on the platform.
According to a Writer, Ian Miles, on Twitter,
“Bitcoin fixes this, FYI. They can’t track where that money goes. They’d have to make cryptocurrency illegal in Canada.”
One of the organizers of the fundraising activities, Benjamin Dichter, announced,
“This is good for bitcoin.”
Some supporters of the protest activities created a group called, the HonkHonk Hodl, and they have been able to raise 21 BTC as of the time of writing this.
“21 BTC. Humbled and in awe. 1/1,000,000th of all Bitcoin that will ever exist have been donated to a single cause, in support of freedom and body autonomy.”
GiveSendGo has reacted to the court order by the Ontario government, stating that the Canadian law does not have any effects on them because they operate in the United States.
According to GiveSendGo,
“Know this! Canada has absolutely ZERO jurisdiction over how we manage our funds here at GiveSendGo. All funds for EVERY campaign on GiveSendGo flow directly to the recipients of those campaigns, not least of which is The Freedom Convoy campaign.”
A political analyst, Brian Lily stated that though GiveSendGo was based in the United States, Canadians will not be allowed to receive any funds from it because of a court order. In his tweet, he stated,
“And this court order stops anyone in Canada from accessing the money. Withdrawing it in the US and sending it here would be a violation.
Expect a court challenge but these funds are frozen for now.”
