Mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez has been a fan of Bitcoin for a while, and that is evident in his decision to receive part of his 401k payment as Bitcoin (BTC). Suarez is one of the first mayors to choose that their 401k payment is made through Bitcoin.
He mentioned this during an interview with Real Vision, where he stated that it was his choice. In the interview, he mentioned,
“I just think it’s a good asset to invest in. I think it’s an asset that will obviously appreciate over time. This is the one I believe in.”
Suarez went on to state that more people were developing trust for crypto and its underlying technology, blockchain.
“Blockchain has succeeded so well because people have confidence in it. They have confidence in it because they see that it’s an open-source and un-manipulatable system. And I think that is the source of the popularity and why it’s done so well.”
The mayor added that in the future the residents of Miami would be allowed to make their municipal payment through Bitcoin.
“We just had an industry day for bitcoin exchanges, and we’re in the process of putting out an RFP (request for proposal) on that.”
Before he announced his decision to receive his 401k payments partly as Bitcoin, the mayor had been paid his salary via Bitcoin through the Strike payment processor.
The mayor’s love for digital payment based on the blockchain is not restricted only to Bitcoin. Under the mayor, the city of Miami has created its city coin called MiamiCoin. The coin was launched in collaboration with CityCoins, a blockchain firm that creates coins for different cities in the United States.
