Ethereum Foundation Backs SEAL to Shut Down Crypto Drainers and Attacks

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has partnered with crypto security nonprofit Security Alliance (SEAL) to step up efforts against crypto drainers, phishing scams and other social engineering attacks threatening Ethereum users.

The partnership falls under SEAL’s newly launched “Trillion Dollar Security” initiative, which aims to proactively track, disrupt, and neutralize malicious actors before attacks can spread at scale.

SEAL said it approached the Ethereum Foundation late last year to secure funding for dedicated security engineering support. The result is EF-sponsored backing for a full-time security engineer whose sole focus is identifying and countering drainer operations targeting the Ethereum ecosystem.

The Security Alliance has done important work to combat attacks and the ecosystem has benefited tremendously,” the Ethereum Foundation said in a post on X responding to the announcement.

Dedicated security engineer joins fight against drainers

Under the partnership, the Ethereum Foundation is funding a security engineer who will work directly with SEAL’s intelligence team to monitor drainer development, analyze attack patterns and strengthen defences against widespread exploits.

SEAL’s broader mission centres on protecting crypto users through shared threat intelligence, coordinated incident response and legal protections for white-hat hackers who help expose vulnerabilities.

Drainers and phishing groups commonly deploy fake websites and emails that impersonate legitimate crypto platforms, tricking users into approving wallet transactions that quietly drain funds. These tactics have grown more advanced in recent years, making detection and prevention increasingly challenging.

According to crypto intelligence firm ScamSniffer, such scams have siphoned nearly $1 billion from users over time. However, coordinated efforts from SEAL and other security researchers helped slash losses to $84 million in 2025, the lowest level on record.

New Ethereum security dashboard tracks ecosystem risks

As part of the initiative, SEAL and the Ethereum Foundation have launched a Trillion Dollar Security dashboard to measure Ethereum’s security posture across six key areas: user experience, smart contracts, infrastructure and cloud, consensus protocol, monitoring and incident response, and social layer and governance.

Each category tracks multiple risk controls and highlights priority areas requiring urgent attention.

SEAL said the EF partnership is only the beginning, adding that it is open to working with other blockchain ecosystems interested in adopting a similar security sponsorship model to protect users at scale.
