Square officially enables bitcoin payments for merchants
Payment processor Square has launched its Bitcoin payment feature, allowing sellers to accept Bitcoin at checkout through its point-of-sale (POS) systems. The feature went live this week, marking a major step in the company’s broader strategy to integrate Bitcoin into everyday commerce.

Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Block Square’s parent company confirmed the rollout, noting that merchants can now choose how they want to receive payments: Bitcoin-to-Bitcoin, Bitcoin-to-fiat, fiat-to-Bitcoin or fiat-to-fiat. This flexibility means businesses don’t have to take on Bitcoin price volatility unless they want to.
Square says more than four million sellers across eight markets, including the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Japan, are now able to opt in.
Feature currently limited to in-person payments
Jacob Szymik, an account executive at Square, clarified that the new feature is currently exclusive to in-person checkouts and POS terminals. However, support for online sales and invoicing is already being developed.
Szymik also emphasized that sellers opting into Bitcoin payments will pay no fees until 2027. After that, Square intends to introduce a 1% processing fee — still lower than the typical 1.5%–4% range for credit card payments.
This follows Square’s October feature allowing merchants to automatically convert a portion of daily card sales into Bitcoin — part of the company’s wider Square Bitcoin payment and wallet suite. The company had previously said it would roll out the service by 2026.
Merchants already testing the feature
Some merchants have already begun accepting payments through the system. Parker Lewis, head of business development at Bitcoin payment platform Zaprite, said he witnessed the feature working during a purchase at Medici, a coffee roaster in Texas. CitizenX chief marketing officer Katie Ananina also used Bitcoin to pay at the same café, noting how difficult it once was to convince businesses to accept crypto
To support adoption, Cash App’s product design team launched a public map showing all merchants worldwide currently accepting Bitcoin. Dorsey encouraged users to share the map and convince more sellers to enable the feature — especially while processing fees remain at zero.
