Why CZ Thinks Hong Kong Could Win the Web3 Race

CZ said Hong Kong has strong potential to become an important Web3 hub because of its fintech talent, links to mainland China and access to institutional capital. Speaking at a Binance Life book meetup in Hong Kong, the Binance co-founder also pointed to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the United States as markets he views positively as governments become more supportive of the crypto industry.

CZ also highlighted the rapid development of real-world assets (RWA), saying the growth of tokenized securities has exceeded his expectations. He argued that tokenization could make assets such as stocks easier to access by reducing some of the restrictions associated with traditional markets, including trading hours, geographical barriers and account-opening requirements. He also described stablecoins as a form of RWA because they represent fiat currencies on blockchain networks, suggesting that more countries could eventually explore tokenizing their national currencies.

The Binance co-founder also pointed to the evolution of decentralized exchanges (DEXs), from early platforms such as Uniswap and PancakeSwap to newer venues such as Hyperliquid. In his view, improvements in infrastructure and user awareness have made DEXs significantly more mature, while further regulatory easing could accelerate their growth and the broader crypto market.

How does Hong Kong compare with other major Web3 markets?

Hong Kong is competing with established Web3 centres such as the United States, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but its advantage lies in its position within Asia’s financial and technology ecosystem. The US remains the largest centre for crypto activity and blockchain investment, while the UAE has attracted a growing concentration of crypto companies and founders. Hong Kong brings a different combination of access to Asian capital, proximity to mainland China and an established base of financial institutions and fintech companies.

CZ’s view is that Hong Kong’s existing strengths give it a chance to participate in that next phase rather than simply compete for crypto traders. The question is whether it can turn those advantages into enough developers, companies, capital and users to stand alongside the larger Web3 ecosystems already established in the US and Middle East.

CZ’s bet on DEX could shape crypto’s next trading boom

The growth of DEXs shows how quickly crypto trading infrastructure has changed, with CZ pointing to platforms such as Hyperliquid as evidence that decentralized trading is becoming more advanced and competitive.

Uniswap remains one of the largest decentralized exchanges, while Hyperliquid has built a significant derivatives market around an experience that more closely resembles a centralized trading platform. The difference is that users can trade through blockchain-based infrastructure without relying on a conventional exchange to custody their assets.

The numbers illustrate how far the sector has come. DEXs have regularly processed tens of billions of dollars in monthly trading volume, while DEX spot trading has at times represented more than 20% of combined spot trading activity across decentralized and centralized exchanges. That is a significant change from the early years of decentralized trading, when high fees, slow transactions and poor user interfaces limited adoption.

Regulation could also determine how far that growth goes. Clearer rules could encourage more institutions and professional traders to participate, but they could also introduce compliance requirements that make some forms of decentralized trading harder to operate. CZ’s optimism therefore rests on blockchain infrastructure becoming easier to use and regulators becoming more comfortable with onchain markets.

Meanwhile, CZ  Trust Wallet to make its existing token-hiding feature easier to access after unsolicited meme coins and other assets filled his public wallet.
