Chainalysis Government Solutions has officially sued the US government over a massive $94.6 million sole-source contract that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) handed to rival TRM Labs. The lucrative deal covers forensic software, open-source intelligence, and AI triage tools, but Chainalysis is calling foul, labelling ICE’s decision to bypass competitive bidding as “arbitrary, capricious, and unreasonable”. For its part, ICE insists that a week-long market review of eight vendors proved TRM Labs was the only firm that could actually meet its operational needs. Now, TRM Labs has joined the lawsuit as an intervenor to defend the award alongside the government, setting the stage for oral arguments on September 2 at the US Court of Federal Claims. With a decision expected by mid-September, this high-stakes legal showdown shows just how fierce the competition has become to secure Uncle Sam’s multi-million-dollar on-chain tracking budget.
X is considering paying creators in stablecoins, with USDC being among the options being evaluated. Although no final decision has been made yet, imagine if a platform that hosts a significant share of the world’s crypto conversation starts routing creator payments through stablecoin rails, the adoption implications would be hard to ignore.
An Ethereum user lost 1,010 ETH worth approximately $2.32 million this week after an old Tornado Cash bookmark allegedly redirected to a malicious frontend. The attack didn’t require sophisticated hacking. A compromised domain and a fake interface were enough. Even experienced users are not immune, and this week was another painful reminder of that.
A few other stories worth your attention this week:
- Kraken launched trading in more than 7,000 US-listed stocks for eligible EEA customers under its MiFID II authorization, continuing the broader push by crypto exchanges to become full-service financial platforms.
- India has become Asia’s least-favoured stock market, with 32% of fund managers net underweight despite $4 billion in foreign inflows, a signal worth watching for anyone tracking emerging market capital flows.
- CZ flagged that Trust Wallet needs a simpler way to hide unsolicited meme coins after his public wallet filled up with them. A minor story, but one that points to a real UX problem that anyone with a public wallet address would recognize.
In AI, China called on nations to resist US pressure to pick sides in the U.S.-China AI rivalry, arguing that countries should retain the freedom to use technology from both ecosystems without political consequences. Meanwhile, Alibaba posted a 9% revenue increase to $39.6 billion in its fiscal Q1, but profit fell as capital expenditure climbed 75% on AI spending.
