At a recent Ethereum Foundation-led L2 event, Mantle highlighted its strategic approach to the next generation of Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) solutions.
Mantle responds to Vitalik Buterin’s L2 vision
Responding to comments from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Mantle emphasized that the future of L2s is no longer just about generic scaling. Instead, the focus is on specialized execution environments that solve real-world problems while remaining fully anchored to Ethereum.
Mantle is aligning its architecture to deliver distinct value across three key verticals: Payments, Privacy, and Real-World Assets (RWAs); AI Infrastructure; and Ethereum-native rollups. The team highlighted its preconfirmation mechanism for real-world latency requirements, such as the UR Global Card, alongside privacy-first features that meet regulatory standards without compromising user experience.
This resonates deeply with how we view the next phase of L2s.
As highlighted by @VitalikButerin, it’s no longer just about generic “scaling” but creating specialized execution environments that solve real problems while staying anchored to @ethereum.

Expanding AI and Ethereum integration
Beyond payments, Mantle is building dedicated on-chain AI infrastructure, positioning itself as a global hub for blockchain-based intelligence. The rollup has already deployed advanced tools such as x402 via Questflow and ERC-8004, aiming to move beyond simple integrations to full-scale on-chain AI enablement.
On the Ethereum alignment front, Mantle has migrated from EigenDA to native Ethereum blob-based data availability, enhancing security and decentralization. The project is progressing toward Stage 1 and Stage 2 maturity, with native rollups representing the long-term goal.
Speaking at the event, Mantle reaffirmed its commitment to Ethereum’s roadmap, emphasizing trustless, composable, and interoperable solutions for the broader ecosystem. “Specialized. Value-added. Ethereum-native. Purpose-built,” the team stated, signalling a clear focus on solving tangible problems for developers and users alike.
With these initiatives, Mantle positions itself at the forefront of Ethereum’s L2 evolution, aiming to accelerate adoption and deliver practical, high-value solutions for payments, AI, and real-world applications.
Meanwhile, Mantle announced a major infrastructure upgrade, shifting its network to use Ethereum blobs as its primary data availability layer, bringing the protocol closer to a full Ethereum ZK rollup architecture.
