South Korea Raises Interest Rates, Tighter Monetary Policy Could Weigh on Crypto Trading

South Korea’s central bank has raised its benchmark interest rate for the first time since January 2023. This step could further slow activity in one of the world’s largest retail cryptocurrency markets.

The Bank of Korea increased its policy rate by 25 basis points to 2.75% on July 16, with all seven members of its Monetary Policy Board voting in favour of the decision. The increase was widely expected after a Reuters survey showed that 36 of 37 economists had forecast the move.

The central bank said stronger exports, higher investment, persistent inflation and financial stability concerns justified the rate hike. It also indicated that further increases remain possible depending on inflation, economic growth and market conditions.

Why does the rate hike matter for crypto?

Higher interest rates increase borrowing costs and often reduce demand for riskier assets such as cryptocurrencies. As financing becomes more expensive, investors may move money into savings accounts, bonds and other interest-paying investments instead of digital assets.

While crypto prices are also influenced by global factors, tighter domestic liquidity could reduce the amount of Korean won flowing into local exchanges, limiting retail trading activity.

The Bank of Korea also indicated that monetary policy may remain on a tightening path if inflation and economic conditions continue to support additional rate increases.

South Korea remains a key crypto market

Despite weaker trading activity in recent months, South Korea continues to play a major role in the global cryptocurrency market through exchanges such as Upbit and Bithumb.

The country’s retail traders have continued to influence digital asset markets. In May, XRP briefly became the most traded cryptocurrency on Upbit, outperforming both Bitcoin and Ethereum in daily trading volume.

Local exchanges have also continued expanding their offerings. Upbit listed Derive’s DRV token across its KRW, BTC and USDT markets on July 14, while Bithumb also launched a won trading pair for the token.

Will further rate hikes slow retail demand?

Retail crypto activity had already weakened before the latest policy decision. Cryptocurrency holdings among South Korean investors fell from about $83.3 billion in January 2025 to $41.4 billion by February 2026.

Trading volume across the country’s five largest exchanges also declined from roughly $11.6 billion in December 2024 to around $3 billion in February, while won deposits on exchanges dropped from 10.7 trillion won to 7.8 trillion won, reflecting lower demand for crypto trading.

The Bank of Korea made room for additional tightening, with many economists expecting another rate increase later this year that could lift the benchmark rate to 3.00%. If that happens, tighter liquidity could continue to weigh on South Korea’s retail crypto market even as global institutional demand remains an important factor in the digital asset market.
