BitMEX to Shut Down Exchange Operations in September 2026

BitMEX will shut down its cryptocurrency exchange operations on September 23, 2026, ending more than 11 years in the crypto market. HDR Global Trading Limited, the exchange’s owner, said the decision followed a strategic review. BitMEX urged users to close their positions and withdraw their funds, assuring customers that their assets remain safe during the transition.

The exchange launched in 2014 and became known for popularizing Bitcoin perpetual swaps, which later became a major product across the crypto derivatives market. However, BitMEX faced growing competition and regulatory pressure, including a $100 million settlement with US regulators in 2022 over allegations involving an unregistered trading platform and anti-money laundering rules.

Users have until the September 23 deadline to withdraw their assets. BitMEX said it is giving customers time to complete the process, while highlighting its record of zero customer funds lost to hacks during its 11 years of operation.

What BitMEX’s closure means for crypto derivatives trading

BitMEX’s closure will not remove perpetual swaps from the crypto market. The product it helped popularize has become a standard part of crypto trading, with exchanges such as Binance, Bybit and OKX now offering perpetual contracts.

BitMEX’s exit instead shows how the market has changed since the exchange rose to prominence, as competition has grown and trading activity has spread across a larger group of platforms. Its shutdown also leaves a question over whether older crypto exchanges can maintain their position as the industry becomes more regulated and competitive.

BitMEX is also joining a long list of major crypto businesses that have disappeared or stopped operating. FTX collapsed in 2022 after a liquidity crisis, while Celsius Network filed for bankruptcy that same year following a freeze on customer withdrawals. More recently, crypto exchange Bittrex shut down its US operations in 2023 after filing for bankruptcy amid regulatory pressure. These cases are different from BitMEX’s strategic decision to close, but they show how quickly the crypto industry can change, even for companies that once held a major position in the market.

Users remembers BitMEX’s legacy as the exchange closes

Some users linked BitMEX’s closure to the growing pressure of regulation, arguing that its high-leverage perpetual futures model may no longer fit the compliance standards being introduced in Europe and other major markets. Others pointed to the exchange’s declining market share, with one user noting that BitMEX recorded $84 million in Bitcoin futures volume the previous day, just 0.08% of the market.

Despite the criticism, the response was largely respectful of BitMEX’s place in crypto history. Bitget described it as an exchange that helped shape the industry before passing the torch to the newer platforms that followed its model. The comments show that, for many traders, BitMEX’s closure is less about the end of perpetual futures and more about the decline of one of the platforms that helped make them popular.

Notably, BitMEX replaced its chief executive and two other senior executives earlier in June as the crypto derivatives exchange continues to reorganise its business amid reports that it could be preparing for a sale.
