Ukraine’s decision to announce a cryptocurrency airdrop in March 2022 triggered a sharp increase in donations, with more than $7 million in digital assets flowing into Ukrainian wallets within hours.
The surge came just days after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and highlighted how quickly cryptocurrency could be used to move funds across borders during a crisis.
The original airdrop plan, however, did not last. Ukrainian authorities cancelled the distribution less than 12 hours after announcing it and shifted their attention toward a non-fungible token (NFT) fundraising campaign instead.

The Airdrop Announcement Triggered More Donations
Ukraine began accepting cryptocurrency donations shortly after Russia’s invasion in February 2022. By March 2, blockchain analytics firm Elliptic estimated that the Ukrainian government and organizations supporting its military had received tens of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency. The announcement of an airdrop appeared to accelerate donations, with more than $7 million entering Ukrainian wallets after authorities said donors would receive tokens in return.
The proposed airdrop was intended to reward people who had contributed to Ukraine’s crypto fundraising effort. Instead, the government abandoned the plan after concerns emerged over the structure and purpose of the distribution.
Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov subsequently announced that Ukraine would pursue an NFT-based fundraising strategy.
By March 11, 2022, Elliptic estimated that the Ukrainian government and an NGO supporting the military had raised approximately $63.8 million through more than 120,000 crypto donations. The total included a $5.8 million contribution from Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood and a CryptoPunk NFT valued at more than $200,000.
The fundraising effort eventually expanded beyond Bitcoin and Ether. Ukraine’s government established official crypto donation infrastructure through the Aid for Ukraine initiative, working with organizations including Everstake and FTX. The platform allowed donors to contribute multiple cryptocurrencies toward defence and humanitarian programs.

The Numbers Continued to Grow
Ukraine’s crypto fundraising campaign did not end with the initial wave of donations. Research published in 2023 estimated that approximately $225 million in cryptocurrency had been donated to Ukraine by July of that year, making it one of the largest crypto fundraising campaigns linked to a humanitarian or military conflict.
The fundraising involved government wallets, charities, decentralized organizations and NFT projects. The UkraineDAO, for example, raised funds through an NFT featuring the Ukrainian flag, while other crypto communities organized their own campaigns.
