This Week in Crypto: The Biggest Stories That Got People Talking

Germany is scrapping its crypto tax exemption law. The country has one of the most generous crypto tax exemptions anywhere in the developed world. Under the current law, Bitcoin and other digital assets held for more than a year are tax-free. There are no conditions, no thresholds, just zero tax on crypto gains. A draft law now circulating among federal ministries would end that, replacing it with a flat 25% tax on crypto gains from 2028, applied to assets acquired after January 1, 2027. The government estimates that the change will bring in around €350 million a year. The legislation isn’t concluded yet, but the direction coming out of Berlin is pretty clear. Anyone holding German crypto positions with a long-term tax strategy built around the current rules needs to be paying close attention to this.

In Singapore, SGX, the country’s primary stock exchange, has secured CFTC authorization to allow eligible US institutional investors trade its Bitcoin and Ether perpetual futures directly. American trading firms can now access the contracts through SGX clearing members, with onboarding that typically takes 2-4 weeks. The contracts have already recorded $5.8 billion in cumulative volume since launching in November 2025, and SGX plans to expand into dated futures and options. Quietly, Singapore just opened its crypto derivatives market to U.S. institutional money for the first time.

A few other stories worth your attention this week:

  • Consensys is splitting into two companies, sending MetaMask one way and its protocols and institutional infrastructure the other.
  • Iran is accepting USDT for export payments and easing FX controls as US sanctions continue to choke off its banking access.
  • BitMart brought in Alvarez & Marsal to review its finances, assess assets, manage claims, and establish an orderly withdrawal process after it halted trading in August.

In AI, OpenAI said 10,000 of its AI agents ran for 88 hours and produced a proof connected to the Navier-Stokes problem, one of mathematics’ most stubborn unsolved challenges.

Mistral raised €3 billion at a valuation exceeding €21 billion, the largest equity round ever raised by a private European tech firm. Europe still has an AI funding gap, but Mistral is at least proving the continent can produce a contender.

It was a full week. If you missed anything, here’s your catch-up.
