World Token Jumps 27% as Sam Altman Reportedly Eyes Biometric Social Network to Kill off Bots

Worldcoin

Quick Breakdown

  • The World ($WLD) token surged over 27% on Wednesday following reports that OpenAI is building a “humans-only” social network to eliminate AI-driven bots.
  • Sam Altman’s proposed platform seeks to enforce “proof of personhood” using biometric data, potentially through Apple’s Face ID or the iris-scanning World Orb.
  • While no formal partnership has been confirmed, the project aligns with Altman’s vision of a verified internet layer to distinguish people from artificial agents.

The $WLD token jumped more than 27% to a daily high of $0.63 on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. The price action followed a Forbes report revealing that OpenAI is privately developing a social media platform designed to exclude non-human users through biometric verification.

Biometric hurdles for bot-free interaction

The reported project represents a significant shift in social media strategy, moving away from traditional email or phone verification toward hardware-level authentication. OpenAI has reportedly considered using existing technology like Apple’s Face ID or the custom-built iris-scanning “Orb” developed by Tools for Humanity, a venture co-founded by Altman. This strategy seeks to reclaim digital spaces from the “Dead Internet” phenomenon, where AI-generated content and automated accounts often drown out genuine human interaction.

The proposed network could integrate OpenAI’s generative tools, such as ChatGPT and Sora, allowing verified humans to create and share AI-assisted content in a trusted environment. Although the platform has reportedly been in development since early 2025, neither OpenAI nor the World Network has officially confirmed a launch timeline. The market, however, has reacted with optimism, viewing the potential synergy between Altman’s two major projects as a massive utility boost for the $WLD ecosystem.

Privacy risks and regulatory scrutiny

Despite the technological promise, the reliance on immutable biometric data continues to spark intense debate among privacy advocates. Critics warn that if centralized databases of iris or facial information are compromised, the identity risks to users would be permanent and irreversible. The World Network is already navigating these tensions, having faced operational suspensions in Kenya and inquiries from regulators in the United Kingdom regarding its data-handling practices.

This pivot toward biometric verification stands in contrast to recent policy shifts in other regions. For instance, the UK recently dropped plans for mandatory digital IDs for workers, opting instead for voluntary models to preserve privacy and prevent the creation of centralized data “honeypots.”

As OpenAI moves closer to a potential launch, the project must balance the need for bot-proof security with the growing global demand for decentralized identity (DID) solutions that prioritize user anonymity.
