Australia has emerged as a significant hub for Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, achieving a remarkable milestone of having more than 1,000 active crypto-fiat machines, including Bitcoin ATMs.
As of April 24, the country boasts 1,002 Bitcoin ATMs, making it the third-largest country in the world in terms of crypto ATM availability, behind only the United States and Canada. This milestone underscores Australia’s increasing adoption of cryptocurrencies, a trend that has gained momentum since late 2022, propelled in part by heightened involvement from private firms.
According to data from Coin ATM Radar, the United States currently leads the global Bitcoin ATM market with 31,170 installations, representing 82.8% of the total. Canada follows with 2,918 machines, making up 7.8% of the market.

Australia’s achievement reflects its rapid strides in the crypto ATM space, particularly considering its previous status as a relatively inactive market.
In April 2023, Australia surpassed Asia in Bitcoin ATM count, surpassing major economies in the region such as China, Japan, Singapore, and India. If the current installation rate persists, Australia is poised to overtake Europe, which presently hosts 1,617 machines, representing 4.3% of the global total.
In a separate development, hackers who previously leaked El Salvador’s Bitcoin ATM database have now released a portion of the source code for the country’s state-operated Chivo Bitcoin wallet.
The hacker group, known as CiberInteligenciaSV, reportedly posted these code snippets on the hacking forum BreachForums on April 23, 2024. In addition to the code, the hackers released a file containing VPN credentials related to the Chivo Wallet’s ATM network.
Notably, local cybersecurity project VenariX issued a warning on April 22 about the impending leak, citing messages posted on CiberInteligenciaSV’s Telegram channel that disclosed plans to release the source code.
