As part of the collaboration, the Sandbox plans to curate a diverse collection of digital collectibles and showcase historical artifacts and items from the museum’s extensive collection dating back to its establishment in 1753.
The collaboration involves the integration of a Web3 platform called LaCollection, which serves as the British Museum’s licensing partner. LaCollection has a proven track record of collaborating with prominent museum institutions globally to digitize artworks, making them accessible in the digital realm.
The Sandbox emphasized that the British Museum, being the world’s first public national museum, has always embraced the concept of being a “museum of the world, for the world” as a core part of its mission and values.
Sebastien Borget, COO and Co-Founder of the Sandbox, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating,
“We are very excited to collaborate with the British Museum to share its incredible collections with new audiences in the metaverse.”
Borget emphasized that the partnership opens up a fantastic opportunity for the Sandbox players to immerse themselves in the museum’s rich collections, regardless of their physical location, fostering a deeper appreciation for human history, art, and culture.
This partnership marks the British Museum’s first foray into the Web3 space, following in the footsteps of other major museums that have embraced innovative approaches.
In October 2022, the Kharkiv Art Museum, one of Ukraine’s oldest art institutions, launched a unique NFT collection titled “Art without Borders.” The collection featured 15 exquisite pieces from the museum’s renowned collection, aimed at raising funds for the museum’s sustainability and preservation of cultural heritage. These NFTs were made available for purchase on the Binance NFT marketplace, reaching a wider audience beyond traditional museum-goers.
