According to Reuters, Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of the G20 countries will meet in India to discuss pressing issues such as cryptocurrency, debt, and global inflation in various countries. The officials will convene at the Nandi Hills Summer Retreat in India from February 22nd to February 25th, 2023. The conference coincides with the first anniversary of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
During the four-day meeting, rising inflation in countries around the world is expected to be discussed. Nations like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan have reached out for support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) due to the global economic downturn.
Last week, it was reported that India had drafted a proposal for G20 countries affected by debt owed to other countries. China, the world’s largest creditor, is at the top of the list for lending to developing countries.
The war between Ukraine and Russia will likely be discussed in the meeting. Debt restructuring for the Ukrainian economy is high on the priority list. Janet Yellen, the US Treasury Secretary, is expected to urge China to release debt relief for Ukraine and other middle-income countries.
Other discussions at the meeting include:
- International taxation,
- Reform of multilateral development banks,
- Cryptocurrencies and,
- Securing finance to counter climate change.
The G20’s Common Framework Initiative, launched in 2020 to assist developing countries in deferring debt repayments, would be expanded to include middle-income countries. The World Bank, India, the United States, and the IMF support this move.
The G20 is an intergovernmental organization that comprises 19 countries with the largest economies in the world and the European Union. These countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, and others. India is currently serving as the president of the organization. Their term began on December 1st, 2022, and is expected to end on November 30th, 2023.
