Karnataka has announced plans to establish India’s first government-backed Artificial Intelligence University as part of a broader effort to strengthen AI research, education, and innovation.
Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar unveiled the proposal at the opening of Google I/O Connect India 2026 in Bengaluru. The state also plans to create an AI Hub that will support startups, researchers, universities, and technology companies working on artificial intelligence.

According to the government, the university will train AI professionals, support advanced research, and encourage collaboration between academia, industry, and the public sector. The AI Hub will serve as an incubation centre where new AI projects can be developed and tested before reaching commercial use.
The initiative forms part of Karnataka’s plan to expand AI adoption across public services, education, healthcare, agriculture, and other sectors.
Building on Bengaluru’s AI ecosystem
Karnataka already hosts many of India’s largest technology companies, global capability centres, startups, and research labs. The proposed university adds another layer by creating a government institution focused entirely on artificial intelligence.
The announcement comes as both Indian states and the central government increase investments in AI talent and digital infrastructure. Companies including Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and NVIDIA have also expanded AI-related partnerships and research activities across India over the past year.
Officials believe combining education, research, startups, and industry under one program could help produce a larger pipeline of AI professionals.
Governments are starting to build AI schools
Governments have supported AI education before, but most have done so by funding research centres or adding AI programs to existing universities. Countries including the United Arab Emirates, China, and South Korea have invested heavily in national AI institutes. At the same time, universities such as MBZUAI in Abu Dhabi were created specifically for artificial intelligence.
Karnataka’s proposal stands out because it places an AI-focused university directly under a state government rather than expanding an existing institution. If completed as planned, it could become a model that other Indian states follow as competition for AI talent grows.
In another development, India’s central bank has reportedly renewed its push to keep cryptocurrencies out of the country’s banking system, recommending a policy that limits exposure to digital assets and to privately issued stablecoins.
