Legal and regulatory challenges continue to grow
The company’s expansion comes as prediction markets face mounting legal pressure in the United States.
Earlier this week, gaming industry groups urged lawmakers to explicitly prohibit prediction markets tied to sports and gambling activities in upcoming crypto legislation. Meanwhile, Kentucky became the latest state to file legal action against Kalshi and Polymarket, alleging they operate unlicensed betting platforms.
The dispute has created a growing battle between state regulators and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). While several states argue that prediction markets resemble gambling products, the CFTC maintains that such markets fall under federal commodities laws.
Are prediction markets becoming crypto’s next mainstream sector?
Kalshi’s IPO discussions come at a time when prediction markets are attracting growing interest from both traditional finance and the crypto industry. While Kalshi operates under U.S. regulatory frameworks, much of the recent growth in the sector has been driven by crypto-native platforms such as Polymarket, which helped bring prediction markets into the spotlight during major political and economic events.
The sector has increasingly become a meeting point between traditional finance and crypto. Prediction markets use market pricing to forecast real-world outcomes, a concept that aligns closely with blockchain-based betting, decentralized forecasting, and tokenized financial products. As a result, investors are beginning to view the industry as a new category of financial markets rather than simply online wagering.
A successful Kalshi IPO could also draw more institutional attention to the prediction market space, potentially benefiting crypto-linked platforms operating in the same sector.
At the same time, growing legal scrutiny shows that regulators are still deciding where prediction markets fit, whether they should be treated as financial products, gambling services, or a new asset class altogether. The answer could shape the future growth of both regulated prediction markets and crypto-based alternatives.
