Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is facing a parliamentary standards inquiry over claims he failed to declare a £5 million ($6.7 million) gift linked to crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, according to reports from the UK.
The inquiry, opened by the UK Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, is examining whether Farage breached House of Commons rules by not registering the payment after becoming a member of parliament in 2024.
Farage reportedly argued that he was under no obligation to declare the gift because it was received before he entered Parliament. However, critics and opposition lawmakers say the payment should still have been disclosed once he took office. The investigation comes as digital asset funding in UK politics faces growing scrutiny from lawmakers, regulators and election watchdogs.

Crypto donations draw political attention in UK
The controversy adds new pressure on Reform UK’s growing ties to cryptocurrency-backed funding.
Reform UK became the first major British political party to begin accepting crypto donations in 2025. The party later disclosed receiving millions in donations from Harborne, including a reported $4 million contribution in late 2025 after an earlier record donation worth about $12 million.
Harborne, a major investor in the crypto industry, has previously backed several political and digital asset initiatives in the UK. The latest inquiry also follows calls from the Liberal Democrats for the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority to review Farage’s involvement with crypto company Stack BTC.
Farage had earlier disclosed a $286,000 equity investment in Stack BTC after securing a 6.31% stake through his media company Thorn In The Side.
Potential Political Fallout and Parliamentary Sanctions
If the Parliamentary Commissioner concludes that Nigel Farage breached the House of Commons code of conduct, the case will be referred to the Commons Select Committee on Standards for a final decision.
Depending on the severity of any rule breach, possible penalties could include a formal reprimand, loss of parliamentary privileges, or suspension from the House of Commons for a set period.
A lengthy suspension could have wider political consequences. Under UK parliamentary rules, suspensions that meet a certain threshold can trigger a recall petition in the MP’s constituency. If enough voters sign the petition, it could force a by-election in Farage’s Clacton seat, putting his position in Parliament at risk.
UK lawmakers push for tougher rules on political crypto funding
Cryptocurrency donations remain legal in the UK under current Electoral Commission rules, but concerns over transparency and foreign influence are growing ahead of the next general election due by 2029.
In March, the UK Parliament’s Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy called for an immediate pause on crypto donations to political parties until stronger regulatory guidance is introduced.
The committee warned that digital assets could create new risks around anonymous political financing and foreign-state influence. Lawmakers also proposed creating a Political Finance Enforcement Unit and lowering the reporting threshold for political donations.
