Polish PM Alleges Russian-Linked Crypto Influence in Presidential Campaign

Poland’s political landscape has been shaken by allegations linking cryptocurrency funding to presidential politics. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has accused crypto firm Zondacrypto of playing a covert role in financing President Karol Nawrocki’s campaign while attempting to sway regulatory decisions in its favour.

Claims of foreign influence and political backing

Speaking before parliament, Tusk alleged that Zondacrypto maintains ties to Russian criminal and intelligence networks, including the notorious Bratva. He argued that these connections raise serious national security concerns, especially in the context of financial influence over political processes.

According to the prime minister, the company not only supported Nawrocki’s campaign financially but also played a visible role in political events. He pointed to Zondacrypto’s sponsorship of the Conservative Political Action Conference held in Poland last year, where high-profile international figures were present. The firm reportedly returned as a strategic sponsor again in March 2025, further deepening suspicions about its political involvement.

Tusk went a step further, claiming that Nawrocki vetoed a cryptocurrency market regulation bill twice within six months. He suggested these vetoes may have been intended to shield Zondacrypto from stricter oversight, though concrete evidence has yet to be publicly disclosed.

Presidency pushes back as regulation debate heats up

The President’s office swiftly rejected the allegations, insisting that Nawrocki does not oppose cryptocurrency regulation outright. Instead, officials argued that the government’s proposed framework is flawed and could stifle innovation within Poland’s growing digital asset sector.

The dispute comes at a time when Poland is under increasing pressure to align its cryptocurrency policies with broader European Union standards. Regulatory bodies are intensifying scrutiny over liquidity flows and compliance measures to prevent illicit financial activity within the crypto market.

Meanwhile, in 2025, Poland’s top security official alleged that Russia is increasingly turning to cryptocurrencies to finance espionage activities and destabilization campaigns across the European Union. According to the report, Russian operatives and locally recruited agents have managed to infiltrate parts of Poland, with several individuals already charged in recent years for espionage and acts of sabotage tied to Moscow.
