Tokyo-listed investment firm Metaplanet has boosted its Bitcoin reserves by acquiring an additional 1,004 BTC, raising its total holdings to 7,800 BTC.
In a regulatory filing dated May 19, Metaplanet revealed its latest Bitcoin purchase—1,004 BTC acquired at an average price of $97,182 per coin. The $104 million investment brings the firm’s total Bitcoin holdings to roughly $712.5 million.
The acquisition comes amid a surge in Bitcoin’s price, which recently crossed the $100,000 mark, fueled by renewed optimism surrounding U.S.-China tariff negotiations. Metaplanet’s holdings reflect an unrealized gain of approximately $77.4 million based on current market value, as detailed in the regulatory filing.
The announcement triggered a 12% surge in Metaplanet’s stock on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, lifting shares to their highest level since February. As a result, the company’s market capitalization climbed to ¥365.12 billion (roughly $2.34 billion), according to data from Yahoo Finance. With its latest acquisition, Metaplanet is closing in on the ranks of major corporate Bitcoin holders. The firm now trails just behind Jack Dorsey’s Block Inc., which holds 8,584 BTC, and U.S.-based crypto exchange Coinbase, with 9,267 BTC, according to data from Bitcoin Treasuries.
Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich stated the company’s goal is to amass 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025. With its latest acquisition raising total holdings to 7,800 BTC, the firm has achieved 78% of that target.
