U.S. Congressmen Demand Humanitarian Release for Detained Binance Executive Following Nigeria Visit

U.S. Representatives French Hill and Chrissy Houlahan have called for the release of detained Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan on humanitarian grounds following their visit to Kuje Prison in Nigeria.

The congressmen reported finding Gambaryan in deplorable conditions, suffering from malaria and double pneumonia.

In a recent post on X, Rep. Hill expressed concern about Gambaryan’s health and lack of adequate medical attention, urging the State Department to secure his release.

Gambaryan, who is currently a Binance executive and a former IRS Special Agent known for his work in cyber and financial crime investigations, was arrested in February 2024 by Nigerian authorities and charged over allegations of money laundering and tax evasion, which both he and Binance have denied.

The case has been marred by complications, including Gambaryan’s absence from a May 22 court appearance, which led to confusion and delays in the proceedings. While Nigerian authorities dropped the tax evasion charges on June 14, the money laundering allegations remain.

The situation has drawn criticism from U.S. lawmakers, with a group of 12 representatives, including Rich McCormick, Michael T. McCaul, and Barry Loudermilk, demanding Gambaryan’s release. They have addressed letters to President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, arguing that the charges against Gambaryan are baseless and serve as coercive tactics against Binance.

However, the Nigerian government maintains that due process is being followed. In a recent statement, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, stated that Gambaryan’s trial is being conducted by Nigerian law and all necessary care, according to diplomatic protocols and the rule of law, is being provided for him.
