Jerome Powell assumed the role of Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System on February 5, 2018, initially serving for a four-year term. Following this, he was reappointed and sworn in for a second four-year term on May 23, 2022. Powell also holds the position of Chairman of the Federal Open Market Committee, which is the primary body responsible for monetary policymaking within the System.
Before joining the Board of Governors on May 25, 2012, and being reappointed on June 16, 2014, Powell worked as a visiting scholar at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C., focusing on federal and state fiscal issues. Additionally, from 1997 to 2005, he was a partner at The Carlyle Group.
Mr. Powell previously served as an Assistant Secretary and Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury during President George H.W. Bush's administration. His responsibilities at that time included policy oversight for financial institutions, the Treasury debt market, and related areas. Prior to his government service, Powell held positions as a lawyer and investment banker in New York City.
Aside from his corporate roles, he has contributed to the boards of charitable and educational organizations, such as the Bendheim Center for Finance at Princeton University, as well as the Nature Conservancy of Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
Jerome Powell was born in February 1953 in Washington, D.C. He obtained an AB in politics from Princeton University in 1975 and earned a law degree from Georgetown University in 1979, during which time he served as editor-in-chief of the Georgetown Law Journal.
Mr. Powell is married and has three children.
