Aptos Faces Critical Downtime on Its One-Year Mainnet Anniversary

Layer 1 blockchain network, Aptos, experienced a significant outage on October 18, 2023, and it caused a halt in transactions for over five hours before services were restored.

According to the Aptos block explorer, Aptoscan, on-chain activity on the Aptos network froze at approximately 11:11 pm UTC at block 104621314. Transactions remained stalled until around 4:30 am UTC the following morning.

During the downtime, Aptos acknowledged the issue on Twitter, stating: “Your energy for Aptos One was so electric, you cut the lights!” The team assured the community that they were diligently working to resolve the problem impacting transactions.

The outage prompted exchanges like Upbit and OKX to suspend Aptos deposits and withdrawals due to the network interruption. Both exchanges later announced that they had restored services after Aptos resolved the incident.

Ironically, this network interruption occurred on the one-year anniversary of Aptos’ mainnet launch. In a tweet before the outage, the team celebrated the blockchain’s one year after it “burst onto the scene.”

It’s worth noting that Aptos is not the only blockchain network that has faced such challenges recently. On October 19, the Theta Network revealed that a recent node upgrade caused an “edge case bug,” leading to a halt in block production on the main chain for several hours. The Theta team initiated a fix, and the network is now operating properly.

Also, Solana experienced a slowdown in block finalization during a software upgrade on February 25, 2023, and it resulted in many transaction failures.

Following this incident, Solana’s co-founder, Anatoly Yakovenko, outlined a six-step plan to improve the network’s performance and stability, as it was well-known for suffering outages.

Yakovenko explained that a blockchain’s speed and usability are affected by several factors, including a lack of flow control for transactions, storage, restart overhead, and invalid gas metering. He said the company’s plan would involve core engineers, validators, external auditors, and developers collaborating to identify and address these vulnerability issues.
