Dfinity Foundation has announced the launch of a $5 million grant program aimed at advancing artificial intelligence applications using blockchain and smart contracts. With a focus on decentralized AI projects, the program seeks to support developers, researchers, and entrepreneurs in this field, with particular attention given to the Internet Computer blockchain for its unique advantages.
The Internet Computer blockchain acts as an autonomous cloud, enabling fully decentralized and blockchain-based AI models to operate independently, eliminating the need for centralized cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services.
The grant recipients will receive Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) tokens, ranging from $5,000 to $100,000. The larger grant amount is specifically earmarked for established teams or developers who have already demonstrated progress through smaller grants.
Dominic Williams, the founder and chief scientist of Dfinity Foundation, emphasized the importance of effectively combining AI and blockchain technology in a meaningful way, going beyond superficial “blockchain theater.” He highlighted successful applications leveraging AI on the Internet Computer blockchain, including Itoka for AI-generated music and Dmail, a decentralized email service.
Williams expressed the foundation’s active pursuit of individuals capable of harnessing the potential of Internet Computer’s AI compute units. He noted the foundation’s utilization of this technology in various applications, such as medical AI systems that require integrity, authenticity, and prompt responses, particularly for large language models designed for medical advice.
In May 2023, the Dfinity Foundation organized the BUIDL Bitcoin hackathon, a collaborative effort engaging over 200 developers. Their collective focus was on developing decentralized applications to facilitate Bitcoin transactions on the Internet Computer blockchain. The hackathon spanned four weeks, culminating in the final submission deadline on June 18, 2023.
