Following the Democratic Party’s victory in the November 2026 midterm elections, Senator Elizabeth Warren is expected to become chair of the Senate Banking Committee in January 2027. Moving from ranking member to chair will give Warren significant influence over financial legislation and investigations, including the power to issue subpoenas and legally demand documents from financial firms.
The market has already reacted to the possibility of her leadership. By November 6, the S&P 500 had fallen 4.4%, while Bitcoin dropped 5.95% to $75,599.
Elizabeth Warren is set to become chair of the Senate Banking Committee, giving one of crypto’s biggest critics major influence over financial regulation.
Democrats are also planning to investigate financial ties between the crypto industry, President Trump, and his family.
Together, the moves point to heavier congressional scrutiny of the digital asset sector.

As committee chair, Warren will have significant control over which financial and cryptocurrency bills receive attention before reaching the Senate floor. However, her authority has limits. Independent agencies such as the SEC and the CFTC will continue operating under their existing mandates. Any major legislation must also pass the Senate and receive President Donald Trump’s signature, although he retains the power to veto it.

Warren’s leadership could stall crypto legislation
Warren’s expected control of the Senate Banking Committee has changed the outlook for cryptocurrency legislation. Industry-backed proposals, including the CLARITY Act, which recently failed a procedural vote, could face further delays and tougher legislative challenges.
An AI enthusiast and relationship coach, @Uncle Meng, described the industry’s concerns, saying cryptocurrency’s biggest critic had just gained control of the committee responsible for regulating it. He also predicted that a major legislative battle was approaching.
@Cointelegraph Crypto’s biggest critic just got the keys to the committee that regulates it. The fight starts now.

Another commenter and a self-cert, @Kaushikb, explained why Warren’s appointment could be more concerning than regulatory actions by the SEC or CFTC. While these agencies can quickly take enforcement action, the Senate Banking Committee plays a central role in developing financial laws that can remain in place long after individual regulators leave office.
Warren running Senate Banking is the one appointment crypto should actually fear. The SEC and CFTC can move fast, but the committee writes the law that outlives them. Market structure bill just got a much harder road.

The uncertainty is also affecting retail investor sentiment. A user named Alex argued that continued political and regulatory pressure could push tens of thousands of cryptocurrency holders to sell their assets. According to Alex, investors are becoming exhausted by what they see as unequal regulatory treatment of digital assets compared with traditional financial assets.

Warren’s subpoena powers could place crypto firms under scrutiny
Once she takes the chair, Warren is expected to use the committee’s investigative powers to examine major players in the digital asset industry.
Her reported targets include prediction market platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi, which could face investigations into possible insider trading and market manipulation. She is also expected to scrutinize major cryptocurrency exchanges operating under digital bank-like frameworks without conventional regulatory supervision.
Another area of concern involves potential conflicts of interest connected to President Donald Trump and his family. Warren plans to examine digital asset ventures linked to them, including World Liberty Financial.
These investigations could create a major confrontation between the Senate and the White House. Although Trump can veto legislation passed by Congress, he cannot prevent Warren from using her committee’s subpoena powers to request internal documents and investigate companies and industry executives.
Crypto trader on X @named Oldman described Warren as the strictest chaperone in town and wished the cryptocurrency industry luck in getting anything past her.
@Cointelegraph Warren running the Banking Committee? Crypto just got the strictest chaperone in town. Oldman says good luck sneaking anything past her, darling.

Through investigations and demands for greater transparency, Warren could increase compliance costs and regulatory pressure across the digital asset sector without passing a single new law.
