Arthur Hayes Warns AI Stock Dilution Could Wipe Out 83% of Investor Value

Arthur Hayes, the co-founder of the BitMEX exchange, just released a severe market warning titled “D is for Dilution.” He predicts that artificial intelligence giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX are preparing to flood the market with new company shares.

When these massive tech firms eventually go public and unlock their stock, the sudden massive supply will crush their share prices. Hayes estimates that early investors in Anthropic alone could lose up to 83 per cent of their equity value by June 2027.

This tech crash will make borrowing money much more expensive across the entire AI industry, forcing banks to pull back their cash. Because less money will flow through the global system, Hayes expects Bitcoin to suffer heavy losses in the short term. His investment fund, Maelstrom, is officially pausing all new trades until the money supply improves. However, Hayes predicts that if the AI market crashes hard enough, central banks will panic and print more money, which will eventually send Bitcoin to massive new highs.

Social Media Influencer on X, @PAIDmanBSC, pointed out that Hayes relies on a very long chain of events happening in perfect order from share dilution to weak stocks, tighter bank loans, shrinking dollars, and finally a Bitcoin drop, noting that if just one step fails, the whole theory falls apart. Still, he marked the 83 per cent Anthropic dilution as the crucial number to monitor.

A self-certified degen on X, @Kaushikb analyzed the financial mechanics, explaining that the real danger is the shrinking of global credit, as Bitcoin is always the first asset sold when banks pull cash out of the system. He noted the irony that the true bullish case for crypto is not the success of artificial intelligence, but the inevitable government bailout when the AI bubble bursts.

Meanwhile, another crypto trader on X, @Dirkcryptodiggy completely dismissed the warning, arguing that the former exchange boss constantly makes wild predictions that rarely come true.

There is a risk of selling more shares

When a private tech startup grows into a massive company, early founders and private investors hold tightly restricted shares. Once the company holds an Initial Public Offering (IPO) and enters the public stock market, these early players are eventually allowed to sell their holdings. This event is called a lock-up expiration. For companies aggressively building artificial intelligence, the financial burn rate is historically huge. To pay for giant data centres and expensive computer chips, these firms are forced to constantly create and sell millions of brand-new shares to the public to raise fresh cash.

This relentless creation of new stock destroys the value of the shares that already exist. If a company suddenly doubles the number of its total shares, each individual share is mathematically worth half as much as it was the day before.

The AI industry is currently consuming billions of dollars a month just to keep its systems running. When these companies enter the public market, they continuously issue new stock to survive. This massive flood of new supply overwhelms the number of people willing to buy, forcing the stock price into a steep, continuous drop, completely wiping out the wealth held by early investors.

Government could help avoid systemic failures

Governments cannot allow a systemic failure in their core financial markets. If an industry collapses and threatens to take the commercial banking sector down with it, federal authorities always intervene. To prevent a total economic depression, they artificially lower interest rates to zero and digitally print trillions of new dollars to buy up bad debt and inject fresh cash directly into the failing system.

When a central bank floods the global economy with trillions of newly created paper dollars to bail out failing tech companies, the purchasing power of each individual paper dollar drops. Investors watch their traditional money lose value in real time.

To protect their wealth from this aggressive inflation, they move their capital out of the banking system and directly into digital assets. Meanwhile, earlier this year, the BitMEX co-founder compared the AI infrastructure boom to the U.S. housing market before the 2008 financial crisis, rather than the dot-com bubble. He warned that a slowdown in data-centre construction could expose billions of dollars in leveraged debt.
