The Sui Foundation has announced a $30 million investment in DATA Network, formerly known as Story Protocol, as the project prepares to migrate its infrastructure to the Sui blockchain. DATA Network retire its independent blockchain and operate entirely within the Sui technology stack. The investment makes Sui Foundation the network’s largest institutional token holder alongside existing stakeholders, including PIP Labs.
DATA is coming to @SuiNetwork.
The DATA Network and Trace are joining the Sui stack, bringing a live supply of rights-cleared AI training data to infrastructure built for AI workloads.
With 250M+ receipts already recorded by Trace, AI labs will be able to source real-world data with verifiable provenance, while @WalrusProtocol provides the underlying storage layer.
Sui Foundation is investing $30 million in the DATA Network, establishing the largest institutional stake in the network, alongside the continuing holdings of PIP Labs and the DATA Foundation. Furthering the alignment, SY Lee, founder of the DATA Network and CEO of PIP Labs, joins Sui Foundation as Strategic Advisor.
In the coming months:
▸ The DATA Network will be upgraded to run as a protocol natively on Sui
▸ Walrus becomes the default storage layer for DATA Foundation apps
▸ $DATA remains the token of the DATA protocolThe next chapter of DATA starts here.

As part of the migration, DATA’s native token will move to Sui at a 1-to-1 ratio, with existing lockups, vesting schedules, governance rights and economic terms remaining unchanged. DATA applications will also integrate with Walrus Protocol, Sui’s decentralized storage network, as their default storage layer. The existing DATA blockchain will remain operational during the transition before being decommissioned, with the migration timeline to be announced in advance.

Sui’s $30M DATA investment may become a strong AI bet
The announcement has drawn attention from crypto users who see Sui’s $30 million investment as a strong vote of confidence in DATA Network’s move toward AI infrastructure. An X user, Mookie, described the investment as “a big deal,” pointing to Sui Foundation becoming DATA’s largest institutional investor while Trace continues to grow. He noted that the protocol has already recorded more than 250 million receipts for AI training data and argued that the funding gives DATA a stronger opportunity to grow its product and attract companies seeking rights-cleared data.
Sui Foundation is investing $30 Million into $DATA.
That’s a big deal friends.
Sui Foundation is becoming DATA’s largest institutional investor. That’s a strong sign of how much they believe in what @datafdn is building.
And this comes while the market is tough. A lot of teams are slowing down but DATA keeps leveling up.
Here’s a quick look at what’s going on:
> Sui Foundation is putting $30M into $DATA, becoming its largest institutional investor
> DATA has a product called Trace that helps track where AI training data comes from and whether companies have permission to use it
> Trace has already recorded 250M+ receipts since June
> DATA is planning to move from its own blockchain to Sui with Walrus becoming the default storage layer for DATA Foundation apps
> $DATA stays as the protocol token, with no immediate changes for holders
The part I like is that DATA already has something to build on.
Trace is live and growing and now the team has Sui Foundation’s backing behind its plans.
Running a blockchain takes time and money, so moving to Sui could give DATA more time and resources to improve Trace and get more companies using it.
And with AI growing so fast, companies need more training data they can use without worrying about copyright or permission issues.
That’s why I think DATA is focusing on the right thing.
They already have a working product and now with $30M in backing from Sui Foundation, the team has a great opportunity to grow.
Personally I like this move and I’m looking forward to seeing what DATA builds next. 🫡

Another X commentator @Tochi focused on the strategic fit between the two ecosystems, noting that Sui already provides infrastructure for storing data, controlling access and verifying computation, while DATA brings data provenance through Trace. The move, in his view, could strengthen DATA’s focus on AI training data while giving it access to Sui’s existing infrastructure.
wait… so sui foundation is putting $30M into DATA and is becoming their largest institutional stakeholder
pretty big commitment to the direction they’ve taken over the past few months
they’ve narrowed the focus to AI training data and have already recorded 250M+ trace receipts for rights-cleared training data
sui already has the infra to store data, control access, and verify compute. DATA completes the stack by supplying the data
that perfect fit explains why the sui foundation wants them within its ecosystem and is backing them with this big money
curious to see what they do with it

Alex Wacy took a more measured view, arguing that the decision to move DATA away from its own blockchain is more significant than the $30 million headline. He said running a standalone chain can distract teams from building products people actually use, making DATA’s decision to focus on Trace potentially more important than maintaining its own L1. However, he cautioned that the 250 million receipts recorded by Trace do not yet prove sustained demand, adding that the migration and future adoption will be worth watching.
A $30M investment in a project that’s moving away from its own L1.
You don’t see that every day in crypto.
That’s exactly what’s happening with @datafdn as it prepares to move from its own chain to Sui.
I actually find the decision more interesting than the headline number.
For years, launching your own L1 was a big deal.
Your own chain, validators, ecosystem, the whole thing.
And then you have to keep all of it running while trying to get people to use your product.Running a chain and building a product are two very different jobs. You can spend years improving infrastructure and still have no clear reason for anyone to show up.
@datafdn used to be Story Protocol. In June, it narrowed its focus to AI training data and Trace, a product recording receipts for rights-cleared data.
Trace has passed 250M receipts since then.
That’s a lot of activity. I’d still want to see how much of it turns into lasting demand. Receipts alone don’t tell you that.
The team is now choosing to build Trace on Sui rather than keep maintaining a standalone L1.
Walrus can handle storage, while DATA puts more attention into the product and getting it used.Sui gets something out of it too.
Trace brings rights-cleared AI training data into an ecosystem with tools for storing and working with that data. And Sui Foundation is putting $30M behind that direction, becoming DATA’s largest institutional holder.
It’s easy to keep adding things to a roadmap. Cutting something you’ve already spent years building is a much harder decision.
It doesn’t guarantee anything.
The migration is still ahead, with more details and timelines to come. $DATA remains the protocol token, and nothing changes for holders immediately. But I’d rather watch a team make one product work than keep adding things to a roadmap just because they can.

Can Sui win enterprise blockchain deals against Ethereum and Solana?
Sui can compete with Ethereum and Solana for enterprise adoption, but it still needs to prove that businesses can benefit from choosing its network. Transaction costs are one factor. Sui supports gasless transfers for certain stablecoins, allowing users to send digital dollars without paying network fees themselves. This could make routine business payments easier, although companies must also consider security, reliability and integration costs.
However, the three networks also offer different tools for developers. Sui uses Move, while Solana primarily uses Rust and Ethereum supports Solidity. Sui also allows developers to combine multiple operations into a single transaction, which could help businesses manage complex payments and digital assets.
