StandX Shuts Down After Cancelling Token Launch

StandX, a decentralized exchange (DEX) for perpetual futures trading, has announced that it will gradually shut down its operations and cancel its planned token generation event (TGE). The platform was founded by Aaron Gong, the former head of Binance Futures, alongside other former employees of Binance and Goldman Sachs. Unlike many crypto projects, StandX operated without funding from venture capital (VC) firms.

Despite attracting 237,000 users and reaching a peak of $200 million in total value locked (TVL), StandX struggled to become one of the top three perpetual DEXs. Gong said this was a major reason behind the decision to close the platform.

StandX has also announced a schedule to help users withdraw their funds and receive their remaining rewards. On October 15, 2026, the platform stopped treasury deposits and yield generation. Trading will move to reduce-only mode on October 20, meaning users will be able to reduce or close their existing positions but will not be able to open new ones.

Airdrop eligibility checks will begin on October 26. Eligible users can claim a one-time reward in DUSD, the platform’s stablecoin, from November 1 to December 31. On January 15, 2027, any positions still open will be forcibly closed at the mark price, which is the reference price used to calculate the value of a position. Users must complete all remaining asset withdrawals and DUSD redemptions by January 31, 2027.

However, StandX does not have enough money in its treasury to cover the entire reward pool. The platform had previously used its revenue to fund product upgrades and improvements that benefited users. As a result, founder Aaron Gong will pay for the remaining rewards from his personal funds.

Building without investors or VC money may come at a price

StandX tried to grow its user base without relying on outside investors. However, competing with heavily funded platforms such as Hyperliquid required huge spending to attract users and maintain market share. Over time, those costs became difficult to sustain.

Data from Messari shows that the average crypto fundraising deal size has surged nearly 50% over the past 30 days in April, even as total capital raised has declined sharply month over month. This suggests capital is increasingly concentrated in fewer, larger deals rather than being widely distributed across startups.

StandX also faced a problem with how it used its revenue. Instead of keeping enough money in reserve for future expenses, the platform directed its earnings towards product improvements and features for users. When trading activity or revenue falls, a project without sufficient reserves can struggle to cover its financial obligations.

Reactions from users show that people have different opinions about the shutdown and the cancelled token launch. X user Albert praised Gong and his team for choosing an orderly shutdown rather than pursuing what he described as a pump-and-dump scheme or taking advantage of the speculative excitement surrounding recent crypto projects.

However, another commenter Aling, raised concerns about the financial losses users could face. According to Aling, retail traders had paid tens of millions of dollars in trading fees while farming points in the hope of receiving token rewards. They are now receiving only a small fraction of that value back through DUSD rewards.

Users who supported the platform through their trading activity did not receive the potential financial benefits of a token launch at a high fully diluted valuation (FDV), leaving them in a difficult position.

Regional challenges and growing competition among perpetual DEXs

Prediction markets and traditional decentralized exchanges are increasingly introducing perpetual trading features to attract more users and trading volume. Platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket have expanded past event-based wagers into perpetual futures, blending real-time event forecasting with continuous leveraged trading.

At the same time, centralized exchanges are tightening their compliance requirements and reducing the number of new derivatives listings. On April 28–29, 2026, Binance Futures scheduled the removal of multiple perpetual contracts, including VINEUSDT, AIUSDT, B3USDT, DEGENUSDT, BOBUSDT, ZKJUSDT, IRUSDT, and DAMUSDT. Binance says its reviews consider trading volume, liquidity, new regulatory requirements, project developments, and whether projects respond to due diligence requests.

X user BroLeon argued that StandX faced structural limitations because of its close connection to the Binance ecosystem. According to BroLeon, this made it difficult for the platform to take market share from dominant Western competitors.

BroLeon also pointed to Binance’s cautious approach to derivatives listings. In this environment, launching a native token might have resulted in a relatively small market capitalization while exposing the project’s named founders to regulatory risks.
