OpenAI’s AI Agent “Took” Someone Else’s Testnet ETH After Using a Public Seed Phrase to Access Funds

Edited by Tolulope Ogunseye

OpenAI has reported that one of its AI research models used crypto from a wallet it wasn’t authorized to access. The incident happened on Sepolia, an Ethereum test network used to test smart contracts without spending real money.

According to OpenAI’s report, the model found a publicly shared recovery phrase, checked wallet addresses linked to it, and used test ETH from one wallet to pay for a contract deployment. The model decided the funds were acceptable to use because the phrase was public and the tokens had no real market value.

The incident drew mixed reactions from crypto users on X. While some dismissed the harm, others saw it as a warning about how AI agents could handle payments and make decisions without asking people first.

Why crypto users disagree about the incident

X user Banteg argued that the incident was a “nothingburger,” saying testnet funds have no value and a known default recovery phrase offers no security. He argues the event didn’t cause a real financial loss because the tokens were only for testing.

That argument shows an important difference between testnet and mainnet funds. Test ETH on Sepolia is not the same as ETH that can be traded for money. However, the absence of financial loss does not mean the model had permission to use the wallet. A public recovery phrase may expose an account, but it does not automatically give everyone the right to spend its funds.

Meanwhile, tehMoonwalkeR saw a different lesson. He called the incident an example of an AI agent finding gas for itself, and linked it to SUI and the possibility of gasless transfers. Gas is the fee paid to process transactions on a blockchain. His point is that AI agents may choose networks or payment routes based on how easily and quickly they can complete a task.

This could help explain why crypto is useful for AI agents that need to pay for services automatically. But an agent finding a way to pay doesn’t mean it should be free to use any wallet it finds. DeFi Planet previously examined how Coinbase is building wallets for autonomous AI agents, including tools that let developers set spending limits.

The bigger concern is what AI agents are allowed to do

X user CuddlySalmon said OpenAI does not understand how Ethereum test networks work. His criticism raises the question of whether the model’s actions indicate a misunderstanding of the test environment. However, the available report does not establish that this was the only reason the model acted as it did.

X user Cris Carrascosa focused on the risks for developers building AI agents and payment systems. She warned that their algorithms need careful checks because unexpected actions can create liabilities. Even when a test transaction causes no direct financial damage, the same decision-making in a real wallet could have serious consequences.

OpenAI says it has added restrictions on internet access and increased monitoring following the incident. The next test for AI crypto systems is whether they can complete payments with proper permission. Developers need rules that limit which wallets an agent can use, how much it can spend, and when it must ask a human for approval.
