Jeonbuk Bank Issues South Korea’s First Bitcoin Loans

Jeonbuk Bank introduced South Korea’s first won-denominated loan secured by Bitcoin on October 12, 2026. The regional bank is currently offering this service strictly to corporate clients who need working capital.

Borrowers can pledge their Bitcoin as collateral to receive traditional fiat currency. Jeonbuk Bank built a custom valuation model that calculates borrowing limits using average prices across global exchanges and extensive stress testing to manage market volatility.

The bank designed the program to keep cryptocurrency completely off its own balance sheet. Instead of holding the Bitcoin directly, Jeonbuk Bank requires borrowers to use registered virtual asset service providers for secure storage. Bank executives stated they will monitor market demand and regulatory changes before opening the service to retail customers or accepting other digital assets.

Can holding your own crypto make lending safer?

During the previous crypto market crash, digital lending platforms such as Celsius Network and BlockFi collapsed after using customer deposits for lending and other activities. When market conditions worsened and customers tried to withdraw their funds, both companies faced severe financial trouble and eventually filed for bankruptcy.

By allowing borrowers to use independent, licensed digital vaults, traditional lenders bypass the risk of bankruptcy completely. The bank evaluates credit and issues cash, while a separate security firm holds the private keys. This separation prevents the lender from risking customer collateral.

This new loan structure also provides a major tool for corporate treasuries. Social media user @Sukil noted that allowing companies to borrow against their holdings unlocks valuable new financial strategies.

Furthermore, @LisanAli pointed out that securing a loan through a regulated, traditional institution represents a far higher level of market trust than relying on a pure crypto company. By acting only as the fiat lender, the bank provides institutional stability without taking on blockchain security risks.

The push for this new financial product was a specific legal amendment to South Korea’s Civil Execution Rules, which officially took effect on October 1, 2026. This updated legislation established a formal legal route for traditional lenders to collect unpaid debts backed by cryptocurrency.

The cash from that forced sale then repays the outstanding debt. Online commentator @Tugba described the use of Bitcoin as collateral inside traditional banking as a clear step toward actual real-world use.

What this means for investors in South Korea

Banks offering loans backed by digital assets could change how South Korean crypto holders access cash. Using Bitcoin as security for a bank loan could let them borrow money while keeping their crypto in case its price rises. The actual interest rate and loan terms would depend on the bank.

Jeonbuk Bank’s move could encourage larger banks to consider similar services rather than risk losing customers who hold significant amounts of crypto. Over time, banks may also explore other products, such as credit lines backed by digital assets. This could make crypto more useful for everyday financial needs, although wider adoption will depend on regulations, risks, and whether banks are willing to offer these services.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Korea (BOK) launched a pilot programme for its first 24-hour international settlement network for the Korean won, allowing foreign investors to trade and settle transactions outside South Korea’s conventional banking hours.
