BlackRock is working to bring its blockchain-based funds into traditional Wall Street operations. The asset manager wants institutions to use tokenized assets as collateral and payment tools that operate around the clock.
Instead of moving traditional brokers and custodians onto separate crypto networks, BlackRock is creating digital connections that work with existing financial systems. Its main product is the USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL), which holds approximately $2.3 billion in assets.

Through tokenized cash products like BUIDL, institutions can settle transactions and transfer collateral instantly between approved wallets. This allows them to operate outside traditional banking hours without having to redeem their holdings for cash.
BlackRock has also secured regulatory approvals across the United States, Europe, and Hong Kong. It has established off-exchange collateral arrangements with platforms such as Binance. These developments support its effort to change how ownership is transferred, and transactions are settled across global markets.

BlackRock’s tokenized collateral raises leverage concerns
Although blockchain technology originally promised a decentralized financial system, BlackRock’s strategy largely maintains the existing institutional structure. BUIDL is not available to ordinary retail investors. It requires a minimum investment of $5 million, while major financial institutions such as BNY Mellon hold the underlying US Treasuries and cash.
The main advantage is improved capital efficiency. Institutions can use relatively conservative assets, such as Treasury funds, as liquid collateral for high-frequency trading on platforms like Deribit and Crypto.com. This allows them to earn returns on their holdings while using those same assets to support riskier trading positions.
However, this arrangement also creates the risk of increased leverage. Tokenized funds backed by conservative assets could become funding for trading strategies, potentially increasing financial risks.
Some retail observers have questioned who benefits most from this system. Social media user Zippgunn questioned how the new digital framework differs from traditional finance when the same major institutions remain in control.

Commentator Zinvested expressed concern about the potential systemic risks. They predicted that aggressive asset tokenization led by companies like BlackRock could eventually contribute to an unprecedented economic depression.

Wall Street is focusing on tokenizing financial infrastructure
The growing use of tokenized money-market funds shows how financial institutions are prioritizing practical benefits from blockchain technology. Rather than focusing primarily on decentralization or cryptocurrency price movements, asset managers are exploring how tokenization can reduce counterparty risk and speed up the settlement of transactions involving income-generating assets.
Market participants are increasingly discussing tokenization as a way to modernize financial infrastructure. Social media user Jason Griffin predicted that every tradable financial instrument would eventually be tokenized. He argued that the technology supporting financial settlement could generate substantial returns even if artificial intelligence attracts more attention than consumer-focused cryptocurrency markets.
@WatcherGuru Everything tradeable will be tokenized. Don’t worry about Crypto so much. The industry might not be as important as AI, but it’s been beat up so badly and for so long that the returns will be every bit as big.

BlackRock’s long-term success of this approach will depend partly on regulatory clarity, reliable connections between platforms, legal certainty over asset ownership, and safeguards against liquidity and leverage risks. The IMF has identified these issues as important to the safe expansion of tokenized markets.
