Beijing Police Investigate CreditEase Over $4.5B Financial Crisis

Beijing police have launched a criminal investigation into CreditEase, a Chinese wealth management firm, over suspected illegal financial activities. Authorities have reportedly placed several individuals under criminal compulsory measures, including founder and actual controller Ning Tang, 53, and a senior executive surnamed Zhao, 51, according to reports from Bloomberg and Reuters.

The investigation follows CreditEase’s suspension of redemptions in May on quasi-fixed-income products worth 30 billion yuan ($4.5 billion). A preliminary audit found that CreditEase Group may be unable to pay its debts, with a shortfall between the money it owes and the funds available to repay them. Meanwhile, the Chaoyang branch of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau has urged affected investors to report their cases to local police to support investigations and asset recovery efforts.

CreditEase collapse raises questions about investor protection

Reactions on X to the CreditEase investigation have focused on investor confidence, the company’s troubled history in peer-to-peer (P2P) lending, and the potential implications for its investments in crypto-related businesses.

X user Jennifer said the case highlights how quickly trust can collapse in wealth management, stressing the importance of the investigation in establishing what happened and whether investors’ funds were put at risk.

Tongtong Bee argued that CreditEase’s troubles were not entirely unexpected, pointing to long-standing concerns about its P2P lending business model. He suggested that the company’s collapse reflects deeper structural problems in the industry rather than a sudden financial setback.

Crypto JP trans focused on the potential implications for the crypto industry, drawing attention to CreditEase’s reported investments in companies such as Circle and Matrixport. He questioned how CreditEase’s financial troubles could affect its investments in crypto-related companies; however, the investigation’s direct impact on those companies remains unclear.

Meanwhile, Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping recently concluded high-level talks in Beijing covering trade, energy security, Iran tensions, and regional stability around the Strait of Hormuz. Crypto assets were not part of the agenda, yet markets reacted immediately.

CreditEase crisis is not the first

CreditEase is not the first Chinese wealth management firm to face a major financial crisis. Zhongzhi Enterprise Group had liabilities estimated at 420 billion to 460 billion yuan against assets of around 200 billion yuan, leaving a potential shortfall of up to 260 billion yuan. Forty-nine former executives, including chairman Gao Xingshan, were charged in Beijing with illegally absorbing public deposits, an offence that carries severe penalties under Chinese law. The company filed for bankruptcy liquidation in January 2024, and a Beijing court pushed the proceedings to cover 316 entities in February 2026.

Investigations into CreditEase’s founder, Ning Tang, and another senior executive are still ongoing, and it remains unclear whether they will lead to similar charges. Beijing’s request for affected investors to report their cases could help authorities identify claims and trace assets, but it does not guarantee repayment.
