Riot Platforms Moves 500 BTC to NYDIG as Market Watches for Another Bitcoin Sale

Riot Platforms has transferred another 500 Bitcoin (BTC) to NYDIG Custody, renewing speculation that the Bitcoin mining company may be preparing to sell part of its holdings.

According to Arkham data shared by Onchain Lens, the transfer was worth around $30.72 million at the time of the transaction. While moving Bitcoin to a custody or execution partner does not confirm an imminent sale, Riot has previously made similar transfers before reporting Bitcoin sales.

Is Riot preparing to sell more bitcoin?

The latest transfer follows a similar transaction earlier this year. In April, Riot moved another 500 BTC to an NYDIG deposit address in a transfer valued at roughly $39 million, adding to a series of Bitcoin movements linked to the company.

Riot has already disclosed significant Bitcoin sales in 2026. In its first-quarter operations report, the miner revealed it sold 3,778 BTC for approximately $289.5 million, with an average selling price of $76,626 per Bitcoin.

The company’s Bitcoin holdings also declined during the quarter, falling to 15,680 BTC from 19,223 BTC a year earlier. Riot said 5,802 BTC remained restricted at the end of the reporting period.

Mining challenges continue to pressure bitcoin miners

Riot’s latest transfer comes as Bitcoin miners continue to face weaker mining economics following the Bitcoin halving.

During the first quarter, Riot mined 1,473 BTC, down from 1,530 BTC recorded in the same period of 2025. Bitcoin mining revenue also dropped to $111.9 million from $142.9 million a year earlier, as higher network hash rate and changing market conditions reduced profitability.

Publicly traded Bitcoin miners collectively sold more than 32,000 BTC in the first quarter of 2026, marking the highest quarterly total on record. Riot, MARA, CleanSpark, Cango, Core Scientific, and Bitdeer were among the miners increasing Bitcoin sales during the period.

Riot expands beyond Bitcoin mining

Alongside its mining operations, Riot continues to invest in data centre infrastructure and high-performance computing services. The company has been expanding its business by using its power assets to support computing customers beyond crypto mining.

Meanwhile, Cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox transferred more than $739 million in Bitcoin in June, the first major onchain transaction in over two months, reviving speculation that creditor repayments could be approaching.

Although the latest 500 BTC transfer does not confirm an immediate sale, it adds to growing attention on Riot’s treasury strategy as the company balances Bitcoin holdings with funding needs for its expanding operations
