XRP Ledger Validators Race to Upgrade Ahead of May 27 Amendment Activation

Validators on the XRP Ledger are under pressure to update their nodes as the network moves closer to activating the fixCleanup3_1_3 amendment on May 27, 2026. The amendment has entered its two-week activation period, following the release of the XRPL 3.1.3 software update on May 8.

The release includes a default-yes amendment, so validators do not need to vote on it manually. They still need to upgrade their software so their nodes can understand and follow the new rules once the amendment becomes active.

The timing matters because the network is also seeing more activity around tokenized assets and payments. That puts more attention on whether validators are ready before the new rules take effect.

Validators have limited time to upgrade

XRP Ledger Foundation community director Hussein Zangana, known as Vet on X, said only about 40% of nodes had upgraded more than a week after the software release.

That leaves a large part of the network still running older software as the activation date approaches. Validators that fail to upgrade can eventually be blocked from participating normally in the network.

The XRPL uses an amendment blocking system for this reason. When a server cannot understand new ledger rules, it can be stopped from processing transactions or joining consensus. This helps prevent older software from reaching a different view of the ledger.

For node operators, the update is therefore not simply a software recommendation. Staying on an older version can affect whether a node continues to work properly after the amendment becomes active.

The upgrade also comes while more products are being built around XRPL. Girin Labs, for example, introduced its XRPL-native Girin Card, which is designed to let users spend digital assets in everyday transactions.

Tokenized assets are adding more activity

The validator deadline comes as XRPL is seeing stronger activity around tokenized real-world assets.

Tokenized US Treasury products on the network jumped from about $50 million to $418 million. The increase was linked to platforms such as Ondo Finance, OpenEden, and Zeconomy.

XRPL’s tokenized real-world asset volume also rose by more than 60% over the month covered by the report. The network now hosts more than $1.5 billion in tokenized real-world assets, according to the same data.

That growth makes network reliability more important for companies using XRPL for financial products. Tokenized assets depend on the underlying network working as expected, so software upgrades and validator participation are not just technical issues for developers.

The new amendment fixes several ledger issues

The fixCleanup3_1_3 amendment covers several areas of the XRP Ledger, including NFTs, Permissioned Domains, Vaults, and the Lending Protocol.

One change deals with expired NFTokenOffer entries. Once the amendment is active, expired NFT offers can be removed while an NFTokenAcceptOffer transaction is being processed.

The update also changes checks for Permissioned Domains and adjusts VaultWithdraw transactions so withdrawals follow destination address trust line token limits.

Other fixes affect loan accounting records connected to Loan, LoanBroker, and Vault entries.

For users, most of these changes will happen behind the scenes. The bigger issue is making sure enough validators upgrade before May 27 so the network can move to the new rules without leaving outdated servers behind.
