Ethereum Maps Out Faster Blocks and Quantum-Ready Future

Ethereum is preparing for one of its most ambitious performance upgrades yet. Vitalik Buterin has expanded on a newly unveiled roadmap that outlines how the network plans to dramatically shorten block times and transaction finality over the next four years.

The roadmap, dubbed “Strawmap” by the Ethereum Foundation Protocol team, sketches a future where Ethereum feels significantly more responsive without compromising security.

At the center of the discussion is slot time, the interval between new blocks, which currently sits at about 12 seconds on Ethereum. The long-term target? Just two seconds.

From 12 seconds to 2: incremental speed gains

Rather than an abrupt leap, Buterin expects reductions to follow a gradual mathematical pattern, cutting slot time from 12 seconds to eight, then six, four, and eventually two seconds.

He emphasized that slot time upgrades operate somewhat independently from other roadmap items. Behind the scenes, improvements to Ethereum’s peer-to-peer communication layer will play a crucial role. By optimizing how nodes share blocks and eliminating redundant data transfers, block propagation delays could shrink enough to make shorter slots viable without weakening security guarantees.

Meanwhile, the Ethereum Foundation shared that it has made an initial deposit of 2,016 ETH and plans to stake around 70,000 ETH in total. Staking rewards will go back into the foundation’s treasury.

Finality in seconds and a quantum shield

The second pillar of the roadmap tackles finality, the point at which transactions become mathematically irreversible. Today, finality takes roughly 16 minutes. The plan is to reduce that window to somewhere between six and 16 seconds.

Achieving this will require a major overhaul of Ethereum’s consensus and cryptography. Buterin described the transition as “invasive,” with the most substantial changes bundled into a broader shift toward post-quantum, hash-based signature schemes.

Interestingly, this phased strategy could make block production quantum-resistant before finality itself is fully upgraded. In a hypothetical quantum breakthrough, Ethereum could temporarily lose strict finality guarantees, but the chain would continue operating.

The roadmap envisions seven hard forks over four years, including upcoming upgrades named Glamsterdam and Hegotá, marking the next steps toward a faster, cleaner, and quantum-ready Ethereum.
