Quick Breakdown
- Mask Network has officially taken over the stewardship of Lens Protocol to drive its next phase of consumer-grade product development.
- Stani Kulechov and the Aave Labs team will transition into advisory roles while focusing on core DeFi innovations.
- The strategic move aims to shift Lens from a technical infrastructure project into a mainstream ecosystem of user-friendly social applications.
Mask Network, a prominent decentralized social infrastructure provider, has assumed the role of steward for Lens Protocol, a leading Web3 social graph. The transition, announced Tuesday, January 20, 2026, marks a major strategic pivot for Lens as it moves away from protocol experimentation toward global distribution and consumer execution.
Stani Kulechov, the founder of Aave and the original creator of Lens, confirmed that Avara (formerly Aave Companies) will remain aligned with the mission but will now serve in an advisory capacity.
Over the years, we have built some of the most important onchain financial primitives. We later expanded that ambition to social primitives that users truly own.

It’s important to note that Vitalik Buterin is actively advocating a shift in 2026 toward decentralized social platforms like Lens and Farcaster, utilizing tools such as Supercast for cross-posting. His goal is to promote platforms that prioritize the quality of information and user interests over the engagement-driven mechanisms found in current social media algorithms.
Mask Network is taking over consumer-facing execution, including product roadmap and operational leadership, for social applications built on Lens Protocol, such as Orb. Lens’s underlying components (social graph, profiles, follows, smart contracts) will remain open-source and permissionless.
The transition did not involve a transfer of ownership, IP, treasuries, or governance control. Aave’s role shifts from product development to technical advisor, focusing on maintaining the social infrastructure.
Shifting from protocol infrastructure to consumer products
Mask Network acquiring stewardship of Lens Protocol signals a new era for SocialFi focused on creating user-centric products. Mask Network, a Web3 application layer specialist with a $100 million venture arm, Bonfire Union, plans to scale Lens’ reach.
Suji Yan, Mask Network’s founder, stated the goal is to build “products people actually use.” This follows Lens’ migration to its high-speed, nearly gas-free ZKsync-powered blockchain, Lens Chain.
Meanwhile, The Aave ecosystem experienced intense market volatility following a significant rift between its decentralized autonomous organization and its primary development laboratory. Although this conflict initially negatively impacted the token’s market value, a notable divergence in investor behaviour was observed: massive whale accumulation counterbalanced retail panic. Ultimately, despite the administrative friction, the protocol’s fundamentals proved robust, pointing toward a potential resolution after the institutional tension.
