Ethereum and Web3 Technologies Poised for Decentralized Renaissance

Quick Breakdown

  • Ethereum scales with proof-of-stake, ZK-EVMs, and L2s, reducing cost and increasing speed for decentralized apps.
  • Decentralized messaging (Waku) and storage (IPFS) now power usable, secure collaboration platforms like Fileverse.
  • Web3 tools offer a practical alternative to centralized Web2 services, supporting permissionless finance, social, and governance apps.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has highlighted the growing maturity of the Web3 ecosystem, asserting that the prerequisites for a fully decentralized internet are now in place. Since its 2014 vision, Web3 aimed to enable permissionless applications across finance, social media, ride sharing, governance, and crowdfunding. Central to this vision were Ethereum, Whisper, and Swarm, the blockchain, messaging, and storage layers, respectively.

Scaling and usability breakthroughs

Ethereum has transitioned to proof-of-stake, with scaling improvements driven by ZK-EVMs and Layer 2 solutions, delivering faster, cheaper, and more efficient transactions. Whisper has evolved into Waku, powering decentralized messaging in applications like railway.xyz and Status. Meanwhile, decentralized storage solutions such as IPFS have become more robust, enabling long-term file retrieval while supporting emerging applications.

Buterin emphasized practical implementations like Fileverse, which leverages Ethereum and Gnosis Chain for document registration, names, and accounts, while relying on decentralized messaging and storage for collaboration. The platform allows users to retain control over documents even if the service disappears, passing what Buterin calls the “walkaway test.”

The decentralized alternative to Web2

Buterin contrasted these innovations with centralized platforms, which he described as subscription-heavy, surveillant, and politically vulnerable services. The growing usability of decentralized tools, he noted, is now approaching Web2 levels, making collaboration, messaging, and storage accessible without reliance on corporations.

The Ethereum co-founder concludes that this is an opportune moment to build or “buidl” decentralized applications, as core technologies are more capable and integrated than ever. With advancements in proof-of-stake, ZK-EVM scaling, and decentralized file and messaging layers, Web3’s original promise is re-emerging as a practical, user-friendly alternative to centralized systems, signaling a new era for blockchain-based applications.

Ultimately, Buterin stresses that true trustlessness requires simplifying the Ethereum protocol itself, ensuring more people can understand and audit the system to combat the risks of complexity and reliance on a small circle of experts.
