Sui’s Mysticeti v2 Upgrade Targets Faster Transactions and Lower Network Costs

Mysten Labs announced the rollout of Mysticeti v2 on November 6, 2025, upgrading the consensus engine behind the Sui blockchain. The update integrates transaction validation into the consensus process, removing separate steps that previously added processing overhead.

According to Mysten Labs, the changes can reduce transaction latency by up to 35%. The upgrade also introduces a new transaction submission path designed to lower bandwidth and CPU consumption.

The improvements target two parts of blockchain performance: how quickly transactions reach finality and how much computing power and network capacity validators need to process them.34567890

What changes with Mysticeti v2?

Mysticeti’s original consensus design, launched in July 2024, uses a directed acyclic graph (DAG) to improve network responsiveness. However, transaction validation previously took place before consensus, creating additional work for the network.

Mysticeti v2 combines these processes. Instead of handling validation as a separate preliminary step, the network incorporates it into consensus. This can reduce unnecessary processing and shorten the time required to finalize certain transactions.

The practical effect is particularly relevant for applications that depend on quick transaction confirmation. Faster finality can improve the experience of users interacting with decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, and other on-chain services. However, the reported 35% improvement is a maximum latency reduction, not a guarantee that every transaction will become 35% faster.

A new path for transaction submission

Mysten Labs has also replaced the Quorum Driver with a new Transaction Driver. Under the previous system, transactions were sent to all validators, while signature aggregation required additional processing.

The new approach sends each transaction to one validator, who coordinates certification across the network. Signatures are then aggregated within consensus blocks instead of being handled separately for every transaction.

This design can reduce repeated communication and lower the resources required to process transactions. For validators, that may mean less bandwidth and CPU pressure. For the wider network, more efficient transaction handling could support greater activity without requiring a matching increase in infrastructure resources.

The benefits will depend on how the changes perform under real network demand. Lower resource use can help, but transaction speed also depends on execution workloads, network conditions, and validator performance.

DeFi growth raises the performance stakes

Sui’s technical upgrades come as its DeFi ecosystem develops. On October 1, 2025, Sui launched suiUSDe, a yield-generating stablecoin developed with SUI Group Holdings and Ethena Labs.

As more financial applications use the network, reliable transaction processing becomes increasingly relevant. Congestion, high resource demands, or slow confirmations can affect trading, lending, and other activities.

Mysten Labs plans to reduce the communication rounds needed to commit transactions, improve how consensus blocks reach full nodes, and address object-level deadlocks in certain execution patterns.

The next test for Mysticeti v2 will be whether these improvements translate into consistent performance as Sui’s transaction volumes and application workloads grow.
