The crypto community is in uproar following growing suspicions that Jeffy Yu, the developer behind AI-powered crypto project Zerebro, may have staged his suicide during a livestream on May 4 to promote his new memecoin, LLJEFFY.
Online sleuths have pointed to a string of peculiar developments as evidence. A private letter, allegedly written by Yu to an early Zerebro investor, claims that the livestream — which appeared to show Yu shooting himself — was pre-recorded. In the note, Yu reportedly described the act as the only “viable exit” from ongoing harassment, threats, blackmail, and fears for his physical safety due to being publicly doxxed.
“With my address publicly known, I have not been able to comfortably reside in any of my family’s homes for months now,”
the letter reads. Yu added that he planned to disappear from public life and focus on music under a pseudonym.
While the letter’s authenticity remains unconfirmed, skepticism deepened after Yu’s obituary was mysteriously removed from Legacy.com. Initially, the obituary had painted Yu as a Stanford-educated tech prodigy who helped grow Zerebro into an $800 million ecosystem.
Further fueling the controversy is suspicious onchain activity. Blockchain analysis firm Bubblemaps traced the movement of around $100,000 worth of ZEREBRO tokens — dumped shortly after Yu’s reported death — into wallets connected to the launch of LLJEFFY. The memecoin, branded as a “legacy coin” that creators must never sell, has since plummeted over 80%, now holding a market cap of roughly $5 million according to DEX Screener.
Crypto personality “Vee” was among the first to connect the dots, noting that a wallet believed to belong to Yu continued transacting after the livestream. Bubblemaps later validated the pattern of transfers.
Adding to the mystery, viewers of the Pump.fun livestream claimed the gunshot visuals and sound effects seemed digitally altered. Some said the muzzle flash appeared inconsistent with the firearm’s placement or lighting.
Notably, online chatter around memecoins has surged to a year-to-date high, signalling a renewed wave of speculative interest among traders, according to a recent blog post from blockchain analytics firm Santiment.
