Metaplanet Inc. has further expanded its Bitcoin holdings by acquiring an additional 145 BTC, bringing its total to 5,000 BTC as part of its ongoing Bitcoin Treasury Operations, according to a recent regulatory filing.
The firm disclosed that the acquisition of the 145 BTC cost ¥1.9 billion (approximately $13.4 million). As a result, the average purchase price of Metaplanet’s entire Bitcoin portfolio now stands at ¥12.8 million per BTC (around $89,000).
With this latest purchase, Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich shared in an X post that the company has now achieved 50% of its goal to accumulate 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025, marking a significant milestone in its strategy.

Additionally, Metaplanet’s key performance metric, BTC Yield, has experienced impressive growth in recent quarters, reaching 13.0% as of April 24. The Tokyo-based firm also revealed the full exercise of its 14th Series Stock Acquisition Rights and a partial early redemption of its 11th Series Bonds, further underscoring its ongoing financial initiatives per the filing.
In the first quarter of this year, Metaplanet acquired 696 BTC through its Bitcoin Income Generation program, which focuses on selling cash-secured Bitcoin put options, enhancing its position in the market. Metaplanet’s latest Bitcoin purchase follows a ¥2 billion raise through its 10th Series of Ordinary Bonds, with the entire amount allocated to its EVO FUND for more Bitcoin acquisitions. This aggressive accumulation strategy has paid off, with Metaplanet’s stock soaring by over 3,000% since the firm began acquiring Bitcoin. Metaplanet aims to hold 21,000 BTC by the end of 2026, demonstrating its commitment to building a substantial Bitcoin treasury.
Meanwhile, Metaplanet has made significant progress in its Bitcoin Treasury Operation by acquiring an additional 162 BTC at an average price of 12.39 million yen (approximately 83,635 yen) per Bitcoin. This purchase brings the firm’s total Bitcoin holdings to 3,050 BTC, valued at nearly $250 million, pushing its Bitcoin Treasury past the 3,000 BTC mark.

Metaplanet Records Bitcoin Valuation Loss in FY2025, But Treasury Strategy Unchanged
Metaplanet has reported a massive non-operating loss due to its crypto assets for the year, which ended on December 31, 2025. In an official notice issued today, the company has reported a Bitcoin valuation loss of ¥102.2 billion (approximately $680 million at the current exchange rate) in the fourth quarter of 2025, which further increased the annual loss.
The reason for the loss is the accounting requirement to value Bitcoin at market rates, which significantly fell in the last quarter of 2025. However, Metaplanet has clarified that its fundamental Bitcoin treasury operation is on course and not impacted by market fluctuations. The company continues to treat Bitcoin as a hedge against the yen and inflation, with no changes in its accumulation strategy.

Forex gains and tax effects mitigate the pain
On the bright side, Metaplanet recognized ¥506 million in foreign exchange gains in the quarter, primarily driven by foreign currency-denominated receivables. Additionally, the firm benefited from deferred income tax gains of ¥1.5 billion, primarily driven by the fluctuations in the value of Bitcoin. The firm also incurred additional amortization of share issuance costs of ¥418 million in non-operating items, although this is a result of last year’s accounting treatment and not related to new share issuances.
Taking into account the earnings forecast on January 26, 2026, which already factored in a loss from Bitcoin, the actual FY2025 results were different, primarily due to the final fourth-quarter valuation and deferred taxes. Metaplanet did not provide any new guidance in the announcement but reiterated that its Bitcoin strategy is on track as planned, despite market fluctuations in the short term.
Meanwhile, Metaplanet’s CEO Simon Gerovich reaffirmed the company’s commitment to its Bitcoin-first strategy, even as the broader crypto market reels from one of its sharpest drawdowns since 2022.
