CZ Explains Memecoin Burns, Tells BNB Chain Users to Send Tokens Directly to Burn Address

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has clarified why he recently burned thousands of memecoins sent to his BNB Smart Chain (BNB Chain) wallet, saying the move was to clear out unwanted tokens rather than make a statement about the market.

The explanation came after on-chain users noticed several memecoins leaving CZ’s wallet and being transferred to the network’s widely used burn address. The transactions quickly sparked speculation across the crypto community, with some suggesting the burns reflected renewed support for the BNB Chain ecosystem.

Why did CZ burn the memecoins?

Responding to the speculation in a post on X on July 13, CZ dismissed the idea that the transfers carried any deeper meaning. He said he had not checked the wallet for a long time and found it filled with tens of thousands of unsolicited tokens.

According to CZ, the large number of assets made the wallet difficult to use, prompting him to test a simpler way of removing them. He described the action as routine wallet management rather than a strategic move.

CZ urges users to use the burn address instead

CZ also advised users not to send unwanted memecoins to his personal wallet in the future. Instead, he recommended sending them directly to the well-known burn address, 0x000000000000000000000000000000000000dEaD, where tokens are permanently removed from circulation.

He said sending tokens straight to the burn address eliminates an unnecessary step and is a more direct way to dispose of unwanted assets. Burn addresses are commonly used on Ethereum-compatible networks, including BNB Chain, to permanently remove tokens because no one controls the private keys to those addresses.

What sparked the community reaction?

Interest in the transactions grew after crypto users observed a wave of memecoins moving from CZ’s wallet to the burn address. Some community members described the move as another example of his support for BNB Chain and its users, while others questioned why the transfers were carried out as a test.

In May, CZ urged developers to immediately review and replace exposed credentials following reports that hackers may have gained access to GitHub repositories during an ongoing security incident involving the developer platform.

Although CZ remains active in the crypto industry after stepping down as Binance CEO, he stressed that the recent burns were nothing more than routine wallet housekeeping and not a signal of any bigger strategy.
