Ukraine has requested crypto donations in its fight against Russia. Donations have been pouring in as people and brands from all over the world are trying to support Ukraine.
Scams have started popping up with the intent of exploiting the desire of crypto enthusiasts to donate to Ukraine and support the attack from the Russian Army.
The country has raised millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrencies in Bitcoin and USDT. But reports state that some fraudulent individuals have started using the chaos in Ukraine to their advantage.
These scam attempts use the desire of people to help Ukraine to their advantage, adding sob stories to their tweets and websites, then inputting a bitcoin address that is not associated with the Ukrainian government. Donors that want to help Ukraine with crypto donations may become victims of these phishing attempts, as they send coins to the scammers’ addresses.
Avast, a premium security company has noted this in their blog,
“As cybercriminals seek to take advantage of the chaos, we have tracked in the last 48 hours a number of scammers who are tricking people out of money by pretending they are Ukrainians in desperate need of financial help.”
These scams began after Ukraine took to its Twitter page, asking for donations. Scam tweets started to pop up on private Twitter accounts. Unsuspecting victims may believe they are donating to Ukraine when that is not the case.
