The Kenyan government has taken decisive action by suspending the Worldcoin project over fears of potential unauthorized collection and misuse of essential private data.
According to a statement published on Facebook on August 2, 2023, the suspension will remain in effect until relevant public agencies have certified that there are no risks to the well-being of Kenyans in relation to the digital identity project.
The country’s Minister of Internal Security, Kithure Kindik, expressed concerns about Worldcoin’s practice of collecting essential identification data, including iris scans, in exchange for a digital ID. He asserted that the Kenyan government would take appropriate measures against anyone promoting, supporting, or engaging in such activities.
Kindik added:
“Relevant security, financial services and data protection agencies have commenced inquiries and investigations to establish the authenticity and legality of the aforesaid activities.”
The Worldcoin project, founded by OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, was officially launched on July 24, 2023. It involves a unique approach where users provide their iris scans in return for a digital ID to authenticate their online identities. In certain regions, participants are additionally rewarded with complimentary crypto tokens.
As of August 1, 2023, more than 350,000 Kenyans have already registered for Worldcoin, with each registrant set to receive free WLD crypto tokens valued at around 7,000 Kenyan shillings ($49.09), according to a Reuters report citing local media.
Worldcoin’s approach to obtaining digital identities through iris scans has sparked both interest and concern in different regions. The UK’s data regulatory agency, Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), has reportedly announced plans to conduct a comprehensive assessment and investigation to ensure the project’s compliance with data protection regulations.
However, Sam Altman remains optimistic about the project’s future despite these hurdles. He recently shared video footage on Twitter, proudly announcing, “One person is now getting confirmed every eight seconds.”
Also, Worldcoin recently announced its decision to expedite the signup process by deploying 1500 orbs across 35 cities in 20 countries.
