Web3 Phishing Scams Target Tyler Hobbs’ QQL NFT Collectors

Generative artist Tyler Hobbs is facing reported phishing attacks targeting collectors of QQL, his collaborative NFT project with Dandelion Mané. QQL raised approximately $16.7 million through its initial mint-pass sale in September 2022. The project allows collectors to generate unique artwork using its algorithm, but minting an official QQL NFT requires a valid mint pass. The collection has a limited supply of 999 passes.

Scammers exploited the system by advertising fake public mints, discounted passes, or exclusive access. Once a collector signs a malicious transaction or grants dangerous permissions, an attacker may be able to transfer cryptocurrency and other digital assets from the wallet. At least one collector has already lost assets; another narrowly avoided the same fate thanks to a security tool that flagged the malicious signature request. Official Quit account and community watchers have confirmed no new mint is underway; the only legitimate QQL activity remains secondary-market trading of the original 2022 passes.

Hobbs previously faced counterfeit projects following the success of his Fidenza collection. Claims about specific trademark actions should be verified before publication.

Users confirm fake accounts and notifications were used to spread malicious links

X user Brungus noted that these tagging attacks appear to follow a recurring pattern, describing the experience as something that happens roughly every quarter.

Platform moderation can also struggle to remove fraudulent posts before users see them. X user Tmo reported receiving a notification for a post impersonating Hobbs, only to find that the platform had already removed it when they tried to open it.

Last month, a wallet drained 3,832 NFTs from hundreds of wallets, raising concerns among NFT holders about a possible security problem. An X user flagged the activity and warned people holding valuable NFTs to consider revoking wallet permissions as a precaution.

QQL’s limited supply also created opportunities for scammers

QQL’s limited mint-pass supply and established collector interest make the project an attractive target for impersonation scams. Its initial sale generated approximately $16.7 million, while the limited number of passes can encourage collectors to compete for access to the collection.

This scarcity can create fear of missing out, particularly when scammers advertise supposed discounts, surprise releases, or opportunities to obtain valuable artwork before other buyers. Collectors may respond quickly without checking the source of an announcement or reviewing the transaction presented by their wallet.

X user Clay highlighted this problem, noting that sold-out generative art collections create market anxiety that scammers can exploit simply by impersonating the artist. The concern is that collectors may mistake a fraudulent promotion for a legitimate reopening or another minting opportunity.

Collectors need to carefully review wallet prompts, avoid signing transactions they do not understand, and check token approvals when necessary. They should also verify contract addresses against official documentation before purchasing passes or interacting with minting websites.
