HSBC to Launch Hong Kong Dollar Token in 2026

HSBC has announced HSBC RedCoin, a Hong Kong dollar-denominated stablecoin scheduled for a phased rollout by the end of 2026. The launch follows the bank’s stablecoin issuer licence from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in April 2026, marking HSBC’s entry into the regulated stablecoin market.

HSBC RedCoin will initially be available to retail customers and merchants through the HSBC HK Mobile App and PayMe, which has more than 3.3 million users. The first phase will support person-to-person transfers and person-to-merchant payments for everyday spending. At the same time, customers will also be able to access tokenized investment products through the banking app. HSBC plans to later expand RedCoin into commercial banking, corporate finance and cross-border institutional transactions.

Each RedCoin will be backed 1:1 by high-quality, segregated liquid assets held as reserve deposits at HSBC, although the stablecoin will not pay interest. HSBC said a survey of more than 1,000 local banking customers found that 74% recognized at least one practical stablecoin use case, with digital asset trading and tokenized investments cited by 57%, followed by P2P transfers at 53% and merchant payments at 52%.

HSBC’s RedCoin draws attention to stablecoins as a banking product

HSBC’s move into stablecoins has prompted reactions that frame RedCoin as part of a move in how traditional banks approach digital payments.

“The bigger shift is that stablecoins are becoming a banking product, not just a crypto product,”

PEXX_Official wrote, while another user described HSBC’s entry as

“another clear sign that digital payments are moving deeper into the mainstream.”

Another user argued that HSBC’s

“real edge isn’t the token, it’s the balance sheet behind it.”

The bank’s decision to launch RedCoin through PayMe has also drawn attention to its existing retail distribution. PayMe already has more than 3.3 million users, leading users to describe it as “a stablecoin with a ready-made retail base on day one.” The initial focus on P2P transfers and merchant payments has similarly been viewed as an interesting departure from stablecoins being used primarily for crypto trading.

However, some X users questioned whether RedCoin will be broadly accessible beyond HSBC’s own platforms. One asked whether P2P and merchant payments would work if

“non-HSBC customers can actually receive it,”

or whether the stablecoin would remain “locked to HSBC’s own banking rails.” Meanwhile, the RedCoin branding itself became a source of jokes, with Walletxofficial noting that

“the logo was already red and the coin is literally called redcoin.”

How will HSBC RedCoin compete in a dominated stablecoin market

As of September 29, USDT represented 60.4% of the global stablecoin market, while USDC held 24.5%, giving the two tokens a combined 85% market share. The overall market was worth about $304.8 billion on September 25, meaning RedCoin would initially operate in a market heavily concentrated around dollar-denominated assets.

The scale gap is also substantial. USDT had about $183 billion in market capitalization while USDC stood near $74 billion in September, meaning RedCoin would enter a market where established dollar tokens already have deep liquidity and broad exchange and blockchain usage. HSBC’s product therefore may not initially compete with them on global crypto liquidity, but on regulated access to digital Hong Kong dollars.

Its competitive strategy is more likely to be local, regulated, bank-integrated and focused on Hong Kong-dollar use cases. Its structure also reflects Hong Kong’s regulatory model. The city’s Stablecoins Ordinance took effect in August 2025 and requires businesses issuing Hong Kong dollar-referenced stablecoins in the relevant circumstances to obtain an HKMA licence. HSBC received its licence in April 2026, placing RedCoin within a framework designed specifically for regulated fiat-referenced digital money.
