Vitalik Buterin has outlined a new idea that could make Ethereum’s consensus system much smaller while allowing the network to support millions of validators.
Buterin introduced what he called the “Extremely Lean Chain.” The proposal would reduce the amount of validator information stored on Ethereum by moving much of the work to validators themselves. Instead of the network constantly updating validator balances and records, validators would periodically submit zero-knowledge proofs showing they had followed the rules.

Buterin said the design could reduce the amount of data Ethereum needs to keep, lower the workload on the consensus layer, and prepare the network for future upgrades such as single-slot finality and quantum-resistant cryptography.
Validators would do more of the work
Under the proposal, Ethereum would stop storing several pieces of information for every validator, including public keys and withdrawal credentials. Validators would instead prove their balances and activity using cryptographic proofs submitted at regular intervals.
The proposal also introduces new privacy features. Validators could regularly change their public identities while still proving they are the same participant behind the scenes. According to Buterin, this would improve privacy without reducing the network’s security.

Ethereum has been reducing complexity for years
Ethereum’s biggest upgrades over the past few years have all had one goal of making the network easier to run over time. The Merge replaced energy-intensive mining with proof-of-stake, while later upgrades, such as the Dencun upgrade, reduced transaction costs for rollups instead of increasing the workload on the main chain. Buterin’s latest proposal follows the same thinking by focusing on the consensus layer rather than transaction processing.
For the Ethereum community, this matters because the network is expected to support far more users and staking participants in the future than it does today. If every improvement added more data and more processing, running a validator could gradually become more expensive. Proposals that reduce storage and simplify consensus are intended to keep Ethereum decentralized by making it practical for more people to participate without requiring increasingly powerful hardware.
Notably, Buterin outlined short-term upgrades designed to improve user protection without major changes to the core protocol. The goal is to reduce how much transaction data is exposed while keeping the network secure, scalable, and easy to use.
